It was just 174 years ago today, September 12, 1847, when a massive and devastating artillery barrage destroyed the fortress and Military Academy of Chapultepec. The Academy was situated on a 200-foot hill southwest of Mexico City. On the 13th, the American Army, with Marines, stormed the fortress, and overtook the defenders, some who jumped to their deaths. With command of the high...

It was just 230 years ago today, September 9, 1791, when the District of Columbia, was officially titled Washington D.C. Sadly, our first official and Constitutional President never served in Washington D.C., though he would later lay the cornerstone for the United States Capital. There is much debate today about Washington D.C., in the Constitution, it never mentioned a place, but it did set up the idea of a separately controlled, by the Federal government, a neutral land mass that...

It was just 160 years ago today, September 3, 1861, when Confederate forces under General Leonidas Polk invaded Columbus, Kentucky, in an effort to push the state in deciding what side of the Civil War it would support. As the Nation split into blue and grey, four states had remained neutral, Maryland, Delaware, Missouri, and Kentucky. Each state had slaves, but didn’t want to secede. In Maryland, several riots would break out that had to be put down by Union Troops. However, when the Confederates invaded, they pushed the legislatures hands, and towards the Union.
