A few years ago a teenage friend of our family died suddenly in a car accident. That is often the hardest kind of death to deal with, when it seems so random, without any explanation, and when it happens to a young person entering the prime of their life.

It is a natural feeling to feel a tsunami of emotions, including anger, at times like that. And in today’s episode I want to share my thoughts on the anger part, so let’s get started.

I’ve been helping men and working with men for a long time now, from informally helping out guys way back in the 80s (as in the 1900s), through leading live men’s events with Significant Man Ministries today. It is my calling and my passion, and to see the changes in men, and the resulting changes in their marriages and families is humbling.

And one of the things I have learned about Christian men is that we tend to fall for one of the big lies of the enemy. And that lie is that we think we have to do everything by ourselves. We think we are the only ones who could ever understand our problems, and we think we are the only one who has ever had our problems. We think we cannot count on anyone else. We think we have to figure out the solution by ourselves.

And sometimes, if we’re being honest, we like to play this part. We like to be the lone wolf who just gets things done, without anyone else. We like to step back and say, look at what I accomplished. Look at me, I have it all figured out, I am the one who did all of this. And see, I didn’t need anyone else.

But, here is the tough part. Eventually, the lone wolf dies.

In our culture, there is something dangerous, but we don’t often see it as such. It is something that can slowly, one small step at a time, take us down a path that leads us away from Jesus, even if it happens under the disguise of following him. And that something is the dangerous message of false teaching.

False teachers are not new, men and women who wish to twist and use scriptures as they desire have been around for as long as there has been scripture to misuse. In second Peter 2, he starts with this, “But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you.”

So this is not a new problem. But in our online world, in our soundbite world, where so many seek out messages that fit in a meme, in my opinion this problem is getting worse, not better. In today’s episode I’m going to dig into this idea of false teaching and why it’s so dangerous, so let’s get started.

In today’s episode I’m going to discuss a critical shift that has to be made in the conversation about your purpose, as a Christian man. There is a new perspective that may be required here, and it is a foundational principle of how we, as Christian men, can view our purpose and calling.

This new perspective is found in the comparison of and contrasting between a purpose that is of this world, and a purpose that is not of this world. There is a conflict between these two purposes, and it is within this conflict that many men find themselves trapped and feeling insignificant in their purpose.

In our world, where everything has become political, and me having my own political views, I do get asked my thoughts on Jesus and our politics here in the United States. Who would Jesus vote for? Which party would he associate with? Would he be a Libertarian, or a Conservative, or a Socialist? So today I’m going to share some of my thoughts on this idea of Politics and Jesus.

Around the world and in religions from all over, many people are taught that if they just do enough good here on earth, they will experience paradise in the after life. They think that being good is enough to get into heaven, so to speak. But, this view is not what the Bible teaches, and it raises a whole lot of questions.

To start with, how is a good person defined? Who gets to create that definition? Do you? Do I? What if we have different definitions of doing good? Is a good person someone who hasn’t committed any serious crimes throughout their life? Or maybe a good person is someone who has dedicated their lives to ministry or to working at a homeless shelter once a week? Or maybe it’s working there every day?

And then, just how many good deeds is enough? Do I have do something good once a week, once a day, how much exactly will count up as good enough. If 51 percent of my actions are what I think are good, is that going to be enough? Can the other 49 percent be not so good?

 In today’s episode I’ll share some of my thoughts on this giant topic, give you some ideas to consider, and share my final answer to this question.

Today’s episode might be a bit strong for some. There is a dangerous trend, especially here in American churches, with the messages some pastors are teaching, and we all need to be vigilant and aware of this. It’s not the most fun topic to discuss, and sometimes people get upset at calling things out like this, but second Peter warns of these dangers.

So what is it that I’m talking about today? What is a problem with pastors? Let’s get into it.

It is becoming all too common to find a big church led by a charismatic pastor who is a great speaker. He uses pauses well, he raises and lowers his voice on cue, he cries on demand… he puts on a really great show. It is emotional, it is strong, it is positive, it is encouraging.

But, what is frequently missing is the actual Bible, the actual foundation of scripture seems to be an afterthought, if any thought, in that kind of environment.

I am a fan of personal development. I’ve been involved in the world of personal development for a long time, and my own work is focused on helping men as husbands, as fathers, and as leaders. I love doing that, love seeing the changes in men as they improve as husbands, as they get better as fathers, and as they become awesome leaders. That stuff is great, but it’s not the ending and there is a challenge with normal personal development.
