Andrew Cunanan was twenty-seven years old. He was brilliant. He was charming. He was fluent in several languages and paid attention to clothes in the way a scholar pays attention to citations. Older men kept him. He made promises to all of them -- a life together, a move, a partnership, a future -- and could not deliver any of them. In late April 1997, the promises collapsed.

He beat his friend Jeffrey Trail to death with a claw hammer in David Madson's Minneapolis loft. Two days later, he shot David Madson on the shoulder of a Minnesota lake road. Seven days after that, he tortured and killed seventy-two-year-old Chicago real-estate developer Lee Miglin in his own garage.

He kept moving. He killed a caretaker named William Reese in New Jersey and took his red pickup truck. For two and a half months, while on the FBI Ten Most Wanted list, he drove that truck down the East Coast to South Beach. On the morning of July 15, 1997, he walked up the steps of the Casa Casuarina on Ocean Drive and shot Gianni Versace twice in the head. Eight days later, on a houseboat at the end of a Miami Beach canal, he shot himself.

He tied the ligature the same way, finished with the same decorative bow at the throat. He left the victims posed in a specific arrangement. A thirty-year-old man from Malden, a methodical handyman with a spotless kitchen at home, confessed to being the Boston Strangler. His name was Albert DeSalvo.

In Phoenix in 2005 and 2006, a man attacked nine women in nine meticulous sexual assaults and killed nine other people in nine equally meticulous shootings. Police called him the Baseline Killer. In North Philadelphia in 1986 and 1987, a soft-spoken tenant named Harrison Graham welcomed women into his one-room apartment and killed seven of them.
