In 1976, a career diplomat with the U.S. State Department was passed over for promotion. On the way home, he stopped at a sporting goods store and bought a sledgehammer. That evening, he beat his wife, his mother, and his three sons to death. Then he loaded the bodies into the family station wagon, drove south, buried them in a shallow pit, poured gasoline over them, and lit a match. He left one member of the household alive: the golden retriever. The dog's name was Leo.
His name was William Bradford Bishop Jr. He has been a fugitive from justice for fifty years. The FBI placed him on its Ten Most Wanted list in 2014 — nearly four decades after the murders. He has never been found.
The Leo facade is not fragile. It holds for years, for decades, for a lifetime, under pressure that would shatter most structures. But it has one structural weakness: it is built to be seen. And when the world stops seeing it the way the Leo requires — when the promotion doesn't come, when the audience looks away, when the image cracks — the response is not quiet grief. It is detonation.
Four cases. Four Leos. The crack in the throne.
