Paul ends a synagogue sermon with a line that should stop all of us cold: “Behold, ye despisers… and perish.” Why would a Spirit-led preacher warn religious people like that? We sit around the table and walk slowly through Acts 13, especially Paul’s claim that forgiveness of sins and true justification come through Jesus in a way the law of Moses could not fully accomplish. Then we trace his warning back to Habakkuk and talk about what happens when people cling to a lie for so long they lose the ability to see truth.

From there, we zoom out to the big question: what does it actually mean to believe the gospel? We bring in 1 Corinthians 15 and Jeremiah 31 to talk about the new covenant, repentance, and why church attendance without obedience can leave a person spiritually unchanged. We also share why comparison and context matter so much, because salvation cannot depend on buzzwords or someone else’s degree, it has to rest on Scripture and the risen Christ.

To make it concrete, we compare Paul’s message in Acts 13 with Peter’s Pentecost sermon in Acts 2. David’s name gets used as a shortcut for greatness, but Scripture refuses to airbrush his story. We start with Acts 13 and the line that stops a lot of readers cold: God promises “the sure mercies of David” and ties that promise directly to Jesus’ resurrection. So what are those mercies, and why would God build a covenant thread through a king who made so many mistakes?

Around the table, we talk honestly about the church today: growth, hunger for the Word, and the need to read the New Testament epistles without disconnecting them from the Book of Acts. We also address something every Christian seems to face sooner or later: spiritual pushback. When conversations turn into debates and insults, we remind ourselves to keep the message simple and steady: Jesus Christ crucified, Jesus resurrected, Jesus as Savior. Conviction does not require cruelty.
