Here’s an excerpt from the blog post.

In a matter of twelve days, Paul was arrested, his life plotted against and hidden away (sort of) in Caesarea. He spent two years in Caesarea speaking plainly the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the Roman leadership. Undeterred by his less than ideal position he contiued to speak to those truths that shape and shake eternity. For all these hardships and the death that certainly lay before him, he would not depart from loving the Lord who bought him and leading well those who would follow him. Paul made every effort "to have a clear conscience toward both God and man." For two years, Paul did not groan and cry about the position he found himself in but rather boasted of the riches and mercy of Jesus Christ and the resurrection from the dead. And here we are in our world, put out of joint when someone says something unflattering to or about us. No wonder we find the world so far from Christ; even those who follow Christ seem to elevate their own comfort above the adherence to the Gospel.

Here’s an excerpt from the blog post.

Again, I find myself convicted by the resolve and boldness of Paul, "I am ready not only to be imprisoned but even to die for the name of the Lord Jesus." I read these words and want this kind of love for my God and King. This marks the beginning of the end for Paul. The people in Jerusalem had heard that Paul was teaching everywhere a departure from the Law, and certainly, he was in a sense, for he knew that righteousness could never be attained through the works of the Law. Everywhere he went, he proclaimed faith as the means by which mankind could be made right with God. The crowds were stirred up against him in Jerusalem as they had been against Christ before him. But God had a purpose for Paul that he would proclaim the Gospel to the Gentiles, their kings, and the Israelites, and Paul had not yet stood before their kings. God was working all things for his own glory, even these wicked accusers who would seek to put Paul to death.

What if we concerned ourselves with one solitary idea every day of our lives: "How can I bring God glory in this moment set before me?" What if that alone was our goal as we busied ourselves with our families, our work, our sport, our rest, and even our distractions?

Here’s an excerpt from the blog post.

On Paul's third journey he spends about three years in Asia with Ephasus as his home base. Previously, the Spirit had kept him out of Asia, but now it was time for them to hear the message of salvation as well. In this chapter, we see a third example of a group of people receiving the Holy Spirit and speaking in tongues. This has happened in three strategic places.

First, the gift of speaking in tongues was given to the Apostles and disciples on the day of Pentecost.

Second, the believers in Samaria speak in tongues, having received the Holy Spirit.

Finally, the people of Asia, at least these twelve, speak in tongues.

It seems to me that, rather than being a formula for all who receive Christ by faith, the gift of tongues here is meant to confirm what God had established in Acts 2. Think about it this way: in Acts 2, the Jews received the Holy Spirit and spoke in tongues to fulfill what the prophet Joel declared. The Samaritan people were not full-blooded Jews, and they spoke in tongues to show that the good news of the Gospel was for them as well. Now, in Ephesus, the Greeks are speaking in tongues to show that the Gospel is also for them. I think that what the Holy Spirit is showing is that they are all beneficiaries of the same good news of Jesus. I can not believe that every believer for all time speaks in tongues. That does not seem to be the model here, and Paul directly contradicts that idea in First Corinthians, as we will see in a week or so.

Here’s an excerpt from the blog post.

Paul made it his custom to enter the synagogues of the cities he passed through. It makes sense; the Jews should know the Scriptures (Old Testament) and be primed to hear the good news of the Messiah. But of course, God had prepared Paul to be a minister to the Gentiles like Peter was to the Jews.

I do love Paul's interaction with the idol worshippers in Athens. He starts, as he always did, in the synagogue, but also speaks in the marketplace every day with whoever happens to be there. He just wanted people to know Jesus. The crowds were so intrigued by his teaching about a "foreign divinity" that they brought him to the Areopagus to speak to those gathered there. The locals spent all of "their time in nothing except telling or hearing something new." I think what I love about Paul here is threefold:

First, he was always willing to talk about Jesus in any venue presented to him.

Second, he was fully equipped to talk about Jesus.

Third, he was well-studied and was able even to quote the poets of the Athenians. (see verse 28)

As to point one; I have been that guy since I was fifteen. I am always willing to talk about Jesus. More so now in the second half of my life.

Here’s an excerpt from the blog post.

Here we finally get to meet Timothy, certainly one of the more recognizable biblical figures if for nothing more than the fact we have two letters written to him by Paul. We will learn later about Timothy that his mother and grandmother were paramount to his faith and maturation, and that he knew the Scriptures (the Old Testament) since childhood.

Also, in this chapter, we see that the Spirit of God kept Paul, Silas, and Timothy from pressing on to Asia or Bithynia but instead urged them on to Macedonia. This must be where people get the phrase, "I'll go here and do this if God wills." Or they will say, "I just don't feel like God freed me to do this thing or that thing." It is interesting that so many people develop a theology off of so narrow an example. We have this example only as a place where God prevented Paul from going, and not even forever since Paul eventually did make it to Asia. People seem to miss the fact that on the first journey, Paul and Barnabas went from city to city as they desired. The same could be said for the latter half of Paul's second missionary journey and all of his third. For the most part, God allowed Paul to go wherever he desired. But in this instance, God prevented him from going to one place so that he could go to another. We do have freedom in Christ. We aren't bound to go to this place or avoid that place. Now, there will be times in the course of human history when God says to someone, "Go here" or "Don't go there," consider Jonah and Paul, but I think those moments are rarer than we tend to believe. If God wants you somewhere, he will get you there, even by a whale. If God doesn't want you somewhere, he will keep you from that place. In the meantime, honor God in this moment and this place.

Here’s an excerpt from the blog post.

One of the things I hope you have realized by this point in the journey is how interconnected the Bible is. So many themes and phrases pop up again and again. When reading the New Testament all the way through, and particularly highlighted for us in the letters of Paul, we see that, from the beginning of the dissemination of the Gospel, there were Law-loving Jews who did their best to make sure that the Gentile converts to Christianity were also observing the Jewish Law. That is what the entire chapter from today's video is about.

Paul, having heard the false teachers from Jerusalem trying to sway the Gentile converts in Antioch to obedience to the Mosaic Law and things pertaining to the Aaronic priesthood, traveled with Barnabas and a couple of others to Jerusalem to inquire from the Apostles if he was preaching "in vain " or, as he suspected if the proclamation of the Law to the Gentile converts was contrary to the Gospel.

Now, it is very important to note that these false teachers were saying you "could not be saved" unless you were circumcised according to the Law of Moses. It wasn't, from their perspective, just a good idea. They believed that salvation was about Jesus "and" circumcision. Jesus "and" is always a false gospel and, therefore, always detrimental.

Here’s an excerpt from the blog post.

This chapter continues the missionary journey of Paul and Barnabas. You can see right away that the Gospel was not received favorably. Or at least it wasn't ONLY received favorably. The Jews had not only treated Christ with wickedness, they had treated the proclaimers of Christ with wickedness. But of course this is what Jesus had warned his disciples about in Matthew 10, and what Ananias, via the Spirit, had warned Paul about at his conversion in Acts 9. The text doesn't tell us whether or not the stoning of Paul was successful in killing him or if it only left him apparently dead. The crowds, stirred up by the Jesus-hating Jews, threw rocks at Paul until they believed him to be dead. But after the disciples gathered around him and prayed for him, he got up and returned to the city, and on the next day, went on to the next city to preach and proclaim Jesus with boldness. How fickle the followers of Jesus seem to be today compared with the boldness of Paul and the early disciples. How timid the believers of today seem. But maybe that's it; they aren't believers. The people who shrink back in fear and wilt in the heat of the day are those who have pretended to be followers of Jesus right up to the point of it costing them too much. And, of course, Jesus also spoke of that in Matthew 13.

Here’s an excerpt from the blog post.

Barnabas was immediately a friend to Paul. We saw that in chapter 9. Together, they spent about a year investing spiritually in the people of Antioch, but now it was pressed upon the prophets and teachers to commission some people for the ministry of the Gospel. The Spirit set apart Paul and Barnabas. This chapter and the next cover what for the Bible amounts to pretty great detail: the first missionary journey of these two men. They took John Mark along with them, though he would later be a dividing factor between the two friends. Now, keep in mind that the lengthy sermon recorded for us in chapter 13 was executed in the synagogue. As I said before about Stephen, I say here about Paul, he was well educated in the Scriptures and used them to speak the message of Christ. Remember, the oral tradition of what Jesus had done was being passed around, but the New Testament still needed to be established. Furthermore, just telling the story of Jesus would not be convincing to the Jews of the first centruy. Jesus, to be valid for the Jews, had to be connected to the Old Testament. So Paul preaches from Genesis, Exodus, Joshua, Judges, 1 Samuel, and 2 Samuel before moving to the New Testament Narrative. Then Paul speaks about the message of John the Baptist and connects the coming of Jesus to the Old Testament prophesies of Psalm 22, Isaiah 53, Psalm 2, and Psalm 16. Finally, Paul warns the people with caution from Habakkuk. Ultimately, the majority of the Jews reject the message, and Paul says, "Since you thrust it [the gospel] aside and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we are turning to the Gentiles." Though Paul will continue to minister in the synagogues, one could argue that this is a turning point where he recognizes God's call on his life to proclaim the good news to the Gentile nations. I can't overstate the importance of believers knowing and understanding the Scriptures. Being able to connect Christ to the prophesies and foreshadows of salvation that are throughout thte old testament is vital for any mature believer.
