Here’s an excerpt from the blog post.

There are several standout things in this section of Nehemiah, but I want to focus on one point for your consideration. The people of God had been selling the poor among them as slaves. There was oppression of the affluent Jew over the destitute Jew. Nehemiah rebuked the people for that wickedness. Where was the care for the brother and sister in the Lord? Nehemiah tells the violators, "The thing you are doing is not good. Ought you not to walk in the fear of our God to prevent the taunts of the nations, our enemies?"

This may be easy to skip over, but I don't want us to miss the statement's import. The people of God, by their sinful behavior, can give rise to the taunts of the enemies of God. David caused God to be mocked by his sin with Bathsheba, Aaron caused God to be mocked by the crafting and worship of the golden calf, the Babylonians mocked God as they took from Jerusalem the captives and burned the temple of the Lord, and the Jews made a mockery of God by proclaiming the righteousness of the Law but walking in rebellion.

Christian, be sure of this: when we walk in life contrary to the truth of Jesus our Savior, we give rise to the mocking of this great God we know and love. Our righteousness before God is indeed settled on account of the blood of Jesus by our faith. Still, our disobedience serves as fuel for the fire of those seeking opportunities to mock our God and Savior. We ought to care so much about the glorification of our Maker that it brings our lives into conformity with the work of the Spirit in us. We serve not our own reputation but the reputation and glory of God.

Here’s an excerpt from the blog post.

Nehemiah arrives a few years after Ezra. He served as the governor of Jerusalem for twelve years before returning to his position under King Artaxerxes. He oversaw rebuilding the wall of the city of God and, of course, received strong opposition, as every faithful person of God before and after him had and would receive.

Nehemiah was a wise man, a person of integrity, and even had a mind for warfare. The image of the laborers carrying the work with one hand and carrying a sword in the other hand is striking. Here is a bit of trivia for you: Based on this text, Charles Spurgeon started a publication in 1865 called "The Sword and the Trowel." It was a monthly publication meant to bolster the work of the faithful followers of God. It is still being produced today and has a wide readership. Other ministries have used this name as well, but Spurgeon was the one who kicked it off. That little trivia won't make you love Jesus more or know him any better, but I still find it interesting, and the name is brilliant.

Here’s an excerpt from the blog post.

Once the people of God began again to rebuild the temple they immediately received opposition. But this time, they were undeterred and continued in the task. God was favorable to the obedience of his people and, again, turned the Persian King's heart towards God's will. As an interesting note, Darius mentioned here in Ezra 5 is likely not the same Darius as the one who threw Daniel into the lion's den. This particular Darius is coming decades after the one from Daniel 6, but that we have two kings with the same name should not unsettle us since we've seen similar things in the kings of the Jews.

Ezra doesn't go to Jerusalem until chapter 7 of his short book. Even when I was recording these videos for you, I defaulted to my faulty view of Ezra and had to record a correction later. It is easy for any of us to assume that Ezra since he is the author of this book, has been present for all of these events. But we see here in the seventh chapter the care with which Ezra came to Jerusalem and the care with which he served and honored God.

One of my all-time favorite verses is found in this section: "Ezra set his heart to study the Law of the Lord, and to do it, and to teach his statutes and rules in Israel." I have long endeavored to be the kind of man who sets his heart to study, practice, and teach the things of God.

Here’s an excerpt from the blog post.

Haggai is a concise book (I still think it is funny that we call them books), so I'll keep it short. The people had resettled in Jerusalem, the foundation was built, and then they abandoned the work. In the meantime, they had busied themselves by making much of their own houses and lands. The result of this rejection of God's commands was that the people harvested little, never had enough to eat, never enough clothes to be warm, and their wages wasted away. "You looked for much, and behold, it came to little. And when you brought it home, I blew it away. Why? Declares the Lord of hosts. Because of my house that lies in ruins, while each of you busies himself with his own house." They had experienced profound lack because of their lack of care for the house of God.

We must be careful not to fold this forward on ourselves as a manipulative way to tell people to be in church. It might be used maliciously in our days like this: "You are suffering lack because you don't give enough money to the church, you don't go to church enough, or you aren't honoring the church correctly." This would be a terrible way of applying this text in Haggai. Our church buildings are not comparable to the temple of the Old Testament. We don't believe that God's presence resides in the pulpit like it once did in the Holy of Holies. We don't think the pastor is the only one who can come before God, like the Old Testament High Priest. We don't imagine we need sacrifices for our sins any further, having been sanctified now by the blood of Jesus. Haggai is operating and prophesying according to the Old Covenant; please don't try to fold it forward on the New.

Here’s an excerpt from the blog post.

One of the dificulties we face in reading the prophets is trying to understand the timeline. Isaiah is 66 chapters spread out over four kings. Hosea is 13 chapters spread out over the same four kings. Ezra is only ten chapters long but covers nearly 100 years of history. In fact, the prophet isn't even in Jerusalem during the first part of Ezra. He is almost working as a historian recounting what God did in Judah and Jerusalem. Chapter four of Ezra serves as a summary of decades of life for the returned captives. We read these books and think of them as happening in a relatively short time. We assume that one chapter immediately follows the preceding chapter, even though it is possible that years have passed or, in the case of Jeremiah, that the chapters themselves are out of order.

The opening lines of Ezra are identical to what we found in 2 Chronicles 36:22-23, but the prophet Isaiah had already spoken of the work King Cyrus would do for the nation of Judah and the people of Jerusalem. (nearly 200 years earlier, by the way)

Pay special attention to Zerubbabel and Jeshua (Joshua) throughout these pages of the prophets. They were instrumental in rebuilding Jerusalem. Zerubbabel was the governor of Jerusalem (since they were under Persian rule, they were no longer allowed to have a "King"). Jeshua, also called Joshua, was the priest of God.

Here’s an excerpt from the blog post.

Zechariah has become one of my favorite books in recent years, though I must admit I don't know it nearly as well as I desire to. It is clear that it shares a lot in common with Revelation, and I've indicated that in some of the additional readings I've given you below. Please remember that Zechariah is a contemporary of Haggai, and both prophets preceded Ezra and Nehemiah's visit to Jerusalem.

I love the repetition in Zechariah's visions, but making too much of the numbers is inappropriate. Jewish numerology is not quite as old as the Jewish people but is a relatively modern discipline. It isn't right to assign meanings to the numbers born from later Jewish tradition and not Biblical teaching.

My favorite chapter of this segment is the third chapter, wherein we find Joshua, the High Priest, cleansed of his sin and set before God in holy attire. Joshua and his friends serve as signs before the people of "The Branch," which we already know to refer to Christ.

I encourage you to delight in the prophecies as you read through this book and see how they beautifully point to the last days and the coming of Jesus, our Priest and King.

Here’s an excerpt from the blog post.

Zephaniah was a prophet during Josiah's reign. Remember that Josiah was king for 31 years. Jeremiah became a prophet during the 13th year of Josiah's reign. It is possible that Zephaniah and Jeremiah were contemporaries or that Zephaniah preceded Jeremiah by a couple of years.

We already know from Jeremiah's extensive book that the people of Judah were wayward and had abandoned the Lord, so nothing in Zephaniah really surprises us. The people succumbed to the gods/idols of the Philistines and even adopted their practices and traditions, like leaping over the threshold.

But like the prophets before and after him, Zephaniah ends with an encouraging word to the people that God will rebuild the nation and bring about justice and peace in the earth. Again, this has nothing (or at least very little) to do with the physical nation of Israel and everything (or at least mostly) to do with the spiritual kingdom of God and the New Jerusalem.

I'll keep this short when we don't understand the circumstances surrounding us, when the world seems to be falling apart, when our enemies are gathered at the gate, when the people have rejected God and mocked those who came in his name, when sin is more desirable among the masses than holiness, when the cupboards are bare, when the sun has scorched the crops, when the bank balance is in the red, when we find ourselves overwhelmed by trembling and weak knees. Then. Right then, we faithful followers of Christ will "live by faith" and rejoice in the Lord. We will celebrate the God of our salvation.

Here’s an excerpt from the blog post.

Hold it in your head that this is a prophecy against Nineveh. It is helpful for us to ask fundamental questions when we read any book of the Bible. Who is the author?

                        Who is the audience?

                        What is the intent?

These words sound very similar to those spoken by other prophets to Israel and Judah, and it would be easy for us to skip over the first verse and read this as a rebuke to God's rebellious people.

We are reminded that God is slow to anger and great in power. It is another nod to the name by which God introduced himself to Moses in Exodus 34.

Remember also that Nineveh is the capital city of Assyria and historically has been the enemy of God and his people.
