Members Reviews:

Meaty Metonymy -- Lovely Writing

Expecting to enjoy this novel a great deal, I enjoyed it even more.

As in Kafka's Metamorphosis, an impossible (or in this case improbable) event leads to and inflects all else.

One day, Owen -- a therapist, father, husband, friend of many -- is barbequed by a bolt from the sky and, by some sort of meteorological metonymy, becomes obsessed with barbequed meats and becomes, in other ways, a handful for his family. But, then, perhaps --netting out pluses and minuses -- he has also become a better person.

This is an extraordinarily funny book. At the same time, along the way, modern family themes develop, often in subtle, elliptical, but powerful ways. Among them: sibling and spousal jealously; the power that possessions have over us; the difficulty in deciding how keep children safe while giving them space.

And also along the way: portraits of people we care about and many terrific sentences. My favorite, roughly, "meeting the right cow, he bought half of her" continuing the barbeque theme. And also a sentence in which the distracted father, traumatized and perhaps even divinely selected, is described as losing his family in his "blind spot." That figure made me reassess my certainly that I approach 20/20 vision as to the lives of dear friends and family.

At one moment, there is a Citizen Kane-like revelation as to how the bolt from the blue produced this meaty metamorphosis. It was something that I had not expected and was dropped so softly as to be almost imperceptible.

A wonderful blend of so many things.

Man Alive! is a wonderful book that illuminates and entertains

I will never think of electricity in the same way after reading this marvelous book by Mary Kay Zuravleff.

When Owen Lerner is hit by lightning, the circuitry of his family is altered in ways both horrible and hilarious. Searching to regain the enlightenment he believes he attained when all his body's electric impulses were momentarily surging in unison, Owen veers away from his profession of child psychologist into an all-consuming obsession with back yard grilling. His wife, their twin college-age sons, and high school daughter are all searching for the new normal and their own enlightenment in the wake of Owen's accident.

Zuravleff writes with such precision and compassion--zapping the reader with profound questions and insights into what makes us human as she tells the story of the Lerner family's struggle to figure out how to deal with the aftermath of this life-altering incident. There are laugh-out-loud lines as well as moments that bring tears, and metaphors so startling and so perfect that I wondered why no one had ever thought of them before.

Absolutely Captivating

This second book of the series was just as sweet as the first. It was funny, romantic and absolutely captivating. I really enjoyed Larry and Jennas story and was so happy to see Larry get his HEA. Of course I couldnt help but fall in love with Harley! The only downside to the audiobook was that all of Jennifer Grobergs voices sounded feminine. This book was given to me for free and I provided this voluntary review.

Fun, enjoyable book

Valentine Hound Dog is the second book in the Have A Hart series. Jenna is used to the business of the fashion world. She returns to town to do her annual fashion show with the proceeds going to charity. When she loses her town model, she asks a family friend and former firefighter, Larry, to help out. Jenna has been known to be self-absorbed and not having to think about things around her because her beauty has gotten her what she has needed. So when she starts to have feelings for Larry, she is questioned about her motives. Nobody believes her feelings are real. Will she be able to prove that she is genuine? And what will she do since this isnt home anymore? Will Larry take a chance on her? If one little hound dog puppy has his way, they both with get what they want. I loved this story! The narrator is great to listen to. Definitely pick up this book!

A Hart felt story!

Cover Love: It's a cute cover that says a lot about the story.

I loved this story. It is my first in the Have a Hart series( I did buy the first after reading this) (Christmas Lovebirds) and am eagerly waiting for Connor's story soon.

Valentine Hounddog is a sweet short story about a beautiful fashion designer and an ex-fireman that was burned severely in a fire. This is a fresh take on the beauty and the beast story, though I hated whenever the presses or anyone referred to Larry as a beast. I never saw Larry as anything but a hero and a very sexy, sweet, kind man at that.

Take a hot man that risk's his life to save children, falls in love with a cute, funny basset hound and a fashion designer he thinks is out of his league, you have a well-written story you won't want to put down.

Jennifer Groberg does a great job narrating giving very distinct voice, making cute sounds for Harley and you can hear various emotions in her voice not just reading a book.

The Illusion of a Corner in the Roundness of the Ring

A friend recommended that I read this wonderful short piece and I'm glad I followed up -- it's an eccentric, lovely, and totally unexpected story of pride, obsession, and... love? Alternately funny and sad, it's stayed with me in the oddest way since I finished reading it.

One thing that really impressed me was how confident is Belle's storytelling voice. Author-omnicient can be hard to do well because the author himself or herself is so much present. Mario Puzo pretty much set the standard for that high-wire act in The Godfather, in my opinion, and though this is a quite different story, Belle has an equally assured storytelling command. For example, "Later, as the legend grew, they would say the bull calf was born with six-inch horns to the clanging of the nearby church bells. Or that it emerged smoldering from a ribbon of dry heat lightning. Or even that this was no bull at all, but the offspring of Indian elephant and Jersey dairy cow. These types of apocryphals will attach themselves to budding legends and gather details like a tumbleweed of untruth. But here now are the true and simple facts of this taurine tale."

Give it a try and expect an hour or two of reading enchantment that will linger long after the story is done.

A captivating novella

This is a powerful and exquisite novella.

The author captures a fantastic conflict between Carlos, an incredible bull, and Hernando, an incredible matador. Their fates become intertwined in this fable of obsession and love.

Here we have a great story, two captivating characters, and language that is precise and fresh. The result is a deeply absorbing and satisfying tale.

I want to add a word for wary and skeptical readers who may think that a novella with two main characters, one of whom is a bull, is not what you have been looking for. The first few pages are almost mesmerizing, and you will want to read this in a single sitting.

A Stunning Debut That'll Break Your Heart

There is so much to admire in this tough, beautiful novella that I almost don't know where to start. I can't believe this is a first effort, since the writing has all the control, composure and assurance of somebody who's been publishing for years. The last time a debut novella impressed me this much was Steve Martin's "Shopgirl".

Like all great stories, Carlos The Impossible can be enjoyed on many different levels. It's a rousing, humorous yarn that would do O. Henry proud, a great little cultural history lesson about bullfighting and the culture that surrounds it, and a subtle allegory about obsession and acceptance. There is such authenticity to time and place - and such attention to detail - that even though I've never even been to a bullfight, this just feels exactly right.

Éditeur: Gallimard

Genres: Fiction, Contemporary

four star for a five star writer

Almost gave up on this book as it was more like a Jane Austen than a Susan Hill but continued as I love this author. It was a clever and probably accurate observation about family life between sisters and mothers and spinster daughters. Bullying, dull details of everyday life - and death, how people make each other unhappy and happy. please write another Simon Serralier novel Susan.

Heavy Weather delivers

Any additional comments?

Heavy Weather is both beautifully written and artfully narrated. The story is full of tea-on-the-porch southern charm and just-one-more-chapter suspense. Full of aw...moments, heartbreak, love, and second chances, Heavy Weather more than delivers the thoughtful and touching story we've come to expect from Normandie Fischer story. And I can't say enough about Laura Jennings. Her narration really brought the characters to life for me.
