Title: The Silk Factory

Author: Judith Allnatt

Narrator: Antonia Beamish

Format: Unabridged

Length: 12 hrs and 52 mins

Language: English

Release date: 05-21-15

Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Limited

Genres: Fiction, Historical

Publisher's Summary:

The story of a young mother who discovers old buried secrets as she goes through her mother's things, all whilst staying in a cottage that centuries before was a silk factory. A beautiful, eerie story of love and memory.

If you try to pick up the pieces, sometimes that's when they fall into place. When young mother Rosie gets the news that her mother has died she decides to leave London and head back to her home village. Carefully picking through her mother's things, she tries not to frighten the children with her tears. Then one piece of paper stops her in her tracks, setting in motion a reawakening of memories long forgotten.

But when Rosie starts to see things, strange things, she believes the stress must be getting to her at last.

In the same village two centuries earlier, Effie, Beulah, and Tobias struggle to survive. As Beulah and Tobias's wages from the silk factory are docked again, Effie wonders how she will keep them out of the workhouse. Just as Beulah starts getting under the skin of the cruel factory master, Effie's heart is captured by young a soldier in a fine red coat. And when he swears to dress her in the very silk her brother and sister make, she hopes the promise might change their lives forever.

The thread that weaves these two stories together is as strong as the foundation of the cottage that has seen these very lives pass through it. The Silk Factory is a story of love, loss, and how the memories that haunt us can also bind us together.

"ExcellentThe writing is restrained but powerful and the description of that remorseless heat is masterful" (New Books Magazine)

Members Reviews:

A good read, but some distracting holes

Although I very much enjoyed most of this book, I felt it had several loose ends that, had they been tied up, would have strengthened the book. On the other hand, real life sometimes leaves loose ends, so perhaps that should not be considered a serious fault.

All in all, I would cautiously recommend this book to other readers.

This is a story of love and of memory

The Silk Factory is not just the title of this story, it is also it's heart. Rosie Milford and her two small children have moved into a house that was once part of a silk factory. The house was left to Rosie when her mother died recently, and she hopes that she and her children can make a new start there.

Members Reviews:

quite boring sequel

After the first novel, this one was disapointing. There was almost no character developement. Characters are either good or bad without change. Evie turns into a WWI super woman without any flaws, quite boring and annoying. Most of the excitement seems to have been spent in the first novel. Moments that could have been dramatic were skipped or only mentioned. Also even more predictable than part one.

Great book

I loved that the narrator had the right accent for the setting, enjoyed it immensely.

brilliant reading great second book in series.

Excellent Follow On

Very good follow up to the first novel in the series. Hope it continues with the next, which I now HAVE to have!

Disappointing

Would you try another book written by Margaret Graham or narrated by Katy Sobey?

Not narrated by Katy Sobey.

What was most disappointing about Margaret Grahams story?

Could not understand her at times because of the accent.

How could the performance have been better?

Change the narrator

Was Easterleigh Hall At War worth the listening time?

Parts of the story was OK but I would have like to have had more story lines to do with the people at the Hall.

Titre: Le Roman de Charrette

Auteur: Philippe de Villiers

Narrateur: Étienne Dalher

Format: Unabridged

Durée: 13 hrs and 42 mins

Langue: Français

Date de publication: 05-15-15

Éditeur: Saint-Léger productions

Genres: Fiction, Historical

Título: Ocho años de silencio [Eight Years of Silence]

Autor: Raquel Franco

Formato: Unabridged

Duración: 5 hrs and 4 mins

Idioma: Español

Fecha de publicación: 04-24-15

Editor: Audiomol
