Beautiful short story!

I have always been partial to short stories as well as historical fiction and this one was beautifully both. Zee's story carried me along while tugging on my heartstrings. I love the way it all came together. Excellent storytelling and a truly enjoyable good read. I am impressed with this author's writing and will definitely read more of her work!

A Touching Short Story

Middlesettlements by Basil Pearl is a short story that will touch your heart and make you believe that miracles do happen - even in the harshness of the wild west of the frontier days.

Zee is alone on the frontier after her husband dies. She also grieves for her child, who was lost in the wilderness on their trek to the west. With a resolve of steel, Zee endures the loneliness of prairie life and keeps her farmstead running without a husband. She is, in fact part of a larger settlement and not truly alone - thus the name of the book, Middlesettlements.

Zee and her faithful dog keep one another company until one day when a couple of men break into Zee's cabin. The story gets really good at this point as an Indian protector comes on the scene and the turn of events changes Zee's life forever. Since this is a short story, I cannot give much more of the plot away, but suffice it to say that the ending has a unique twist that will give you goosebumps.

For a debut offering, Middlesettlements is a very good read - one that is filled with heart-tugging emotion, love and hope in a harsh environment. Looking forward to more from this talented author.

As refreshing as a ladle of cold well water on a hot summer's day in Tennessee!

This beautiful little story transports the reader back to a simpler yet harsh time in the history of this great nation. It was amazing to me how quickly and thoroughly author Basil Pearl drew me in... mind, heart, and soul. Her characters come alive as easily as the spring flowers in her main character's yard.

It's most refreshing to read a simple, uplifting story filled with true grit and the spirit of God.

You could easily ascertain that the author Basil Pearl was writing about a style of life she intimately knows.

In short, I loved this story!

Fantastic story, beautifully written and narrated...

Spanning three generations and told from multiple perspectives, Andrew Rajan's 'Cathedrals in the Sky' is lyrical and beautiful.

The varied narrative perspectives lend themselves to an audiobook format and the author's experience as an actor offers a richness and easy appeal to the delivery.

Character's accents are convincing and the main protagonist's narrative voice is gentle, wry and often moving.

Descriptions are detailed, precise and beautifully apt - hearing them aloud makes them intensely vivid, almost filmic in their immediacy.

Highly recommended for anyone who relishes decent writing, multi-layered plots and fluid narration. A gem of a book.
