JMW Turner's early life adventures

A really unique mix of period style story, with adventures both above and below stairs. This book features a well known artist, but tells an unknown tale. It includes high spirited repartee by 2 young boys ( both artists) whilst staying at a country seat. Includes insights into Turner's early life, his humble origins, how his his mother&father affect his status in society, and is really entertaining. I would recommend it without hesitation.

Monotonous and slow

Tried for several hours to listen but there is nothing to hold your interest, no story, nothing to make you want to carry on so gave up. Narration boring which didn't help. Sorry but sending this one back.

Quick light read with some drama and excitement

The storyline was pretty predictable but nonetheless gripping and enjoyable enough. I did actually cry at one point which rarely happens. The description of work in the mine and at the frontline did get to me.

Hope Among The Hopeless

I ran across this layered and evocative short story on the Electric Literature blog the other week and decided that I liked it enough to own and read again more closely. It still stays with me, an elliptical and foreboding tale set in the logging camps of the Pacific Northwest and populated with the ghostly and out-of-time.

The writing is graceful, deliberate and precise as it unfolds. The writer draws you in and slows you to the story's rhythm. The character studies are quick but closely drawn enough to hint at much deeper relationships and rougher details underneath the surface. At times, it reads almost non-fiction in its sights and sounds. Looking forward to reading more from this author.

Maybe

An interesting short piece about logging that draws into the descriptive narrative moral dilemmas. Deadwood it may not be, but this writer is worth watching.
