Title: Will & Tom

Author: Matthew Plampin

Narrator: Leighton Pugh

Format: Unabridged

Length: 9 hrs and 52 mins

Language: English

Release date: 03-12-15

Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Limited

Genres: Fiction, Historical

Publisher's Summary:

Will & Tom is a glimpse into the life of the infamous artist J. M. W Turner as a young man during a week spent at Harewood House fighting for a commission against his childhood friend and rival, Tom Girtin.

1797, West Yorkshire. When young artist Will Turner arrives at Harewood House at the invitation of aristocrat Beau Lascelles, his intention is to do no more than sketch the house and grounds, receive his commission, and return to London.

But Will is not the only artist here: He is one of two men who will make up a Cockney Project. His fellow artist? Childhood friend and now rival Tom Girtin, dressed up as much as his meager wallet can allow, billing and cooing amongst the esteemed guests. But Will is not so easily distracted. He wants to get the job done and get out.

As neither servant nor hallowed guest, Will finds few allies but is content to be cloistered in his room with no distractions - ensuring the expedience of his work. But the servant halls are alive with whispers of scandal, and when Will ventures to sketch the local ruins he instead witnesses something that will threaten both his commission and his friendship.

Alive with intrigue, artistic rivalry, and society scandal, Will & Tom is a glimpse into the life of the infamous artist J. M. W. Turner and a story of how we are liberated from the shackles of our masters at a time when England is awakening to its crimes of slavery and servitude.

Critic Reviews:

"A fascinating novel that brings to life an extraordinary historical episode...I can't wait to see where Matthew Plampin goes next." (Andrew Taylor, author of The American Boy)

"Fascinating...Matthew Plampin lights up a murky episode of French history." (Liza Picard, author of Victorian London)

"A galloping good story." (The Times)

"Lust, avarice, envy, revenge all play their part in this brilliantly told, well-paced story." (Daily Mail)

"Plampin's historical research is impressive, as is his command of detail...his true gift of descriptive power." (Independent on Sunday)

JMW Turner's early life adventures

A really unique mix of period style story, with adventures both above and below stairs. This book features a well known artist, but tells an unknown tale. It includes high spirited repartee by 2 young boys ( both artists) whilst staying at a country seat. Includes insights into Turner's early life, his humble origins, how his his mother&father affect his status in society, and is really entertaining. I would recommend it without hesitation.

"A glorious read." (Frost Magazine)

Monotonous and slow

Tried for several hours to listen but there is nothing to hold your interest, no story, nothing to make you want to carry on so gave up. Narration boring which didn't help. Sorry but sending this one back.

Quick light read with some drama and excitement

The storyline was pretty predictable but nonetheless gripping and enjoyable enough. I did actually cry at one point which rarely happens. The description of work in the mine and at the frontline did get to me.

Wonderful first book - gripping

Would you consider the audio edition of Easterleigh Hall to be better than the print version?

Audio

What other book might you compare Easterleigh Hall to, and why?

Other world war 1 family stories

Have you listened to any of Katy Sobeys other performances? How does this one compare?

No but getting second book in series.Great narrator.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Publisher's Summary:

Noreen McAuliffe's Come Down in the World, a story about a nineteenth-century logging camp, wears a style so seamless and perfectly matched it feels tailor-made. From the first few lines to the quietly explosive finale, the listener is surrounded with instant authenticity that transports us to a time, place, and situation with stakes so high that most of us need a daring writer to imagine them for us. In the span of a story, the listener feels a novel's worth of atmosphere, urgency, and promise, and meets characters revealed with such precision, you may wonder if you've dreamt of them before.

Julia Fierro, author of Cutting Teeth

Hope Among The Hopeless

I ran across this layered and evocative short story on the Electric Literature blog the other week and decided that I liked it enough to own and read again more closely. It still stays with me, an elliptical and foreboding tale set in the logging camps of the Pacific Northwest and populated with the ghostly and out-of-time.

The writing is graceful, deliberate and precise as it unfolds. The writer draws you in and slows you to the story's rhythm. The character studies are quick but closely drawn enough to hint at much deeper relationships and rougher details underneath the surface. At times, it reads almost non-fiction in its sights and sounds. Looking forward to reading more from this author.

Maybe

An interesting short piece about logging that draws into the descriptive narrative moral dilemmas. Deadwood it may not be, but this writer is worth watching.

Titel: Die Mechanik des Herzens

Autor:: Mathias Malzieu

Erzähler: Vladimir Burlakov

Format: Abridged

Spieldauer: 3 hrs and 27 mins

Sprache: Deutsch

Veröffentlichungsdatum: 07-24-14

Herausgeber: Argon Verlag

Kategorien: Fiction, Historical
