Charming bits of magic, herbs and folklore ¿

I bought this book for my nine year old avid reader. Though she could easily read it to herself we ended up reading it out loud at bedtime. I thoroughly enjoyed this book (maybe even more than she). It is a charming, sweet and magic-filled story with fun bits of herbal folklore.

Sweet story about appreciating differences and having courage

When I chose this book I didn't pay much attention and thought it was a children's picture book, so I was surprised when it arrived in the mail. I finally got around to reading it and I really like it. I loved the little caution at the beginning about making potions - my kids have all loved making potions (but thankfully never ingested them!). One reason I loved this book is that once upon a time when my older children were young I was Molly's mom - so into herbs and plants and vibrations and wishing and being a vegetarian. All of my friends were too, so it was not so wierd, but we lived in the suburbs and the other parents thought me odd and my kids were always having to explain things and feeling wierd about their different names and such. My oldest daughter agrees this book is a book I would have bought for her back then. Years later I am still the mother of young children, but I am a Christian; Im not a vegetarian, I dont put stock in wishes or vibrations. I do love knowing about plants and things though. The wishing and such parts put me off some on this book, but there was so much that I liked about this book that I will let my 10 yr old read it with some discussion between us about it.

I loved that it showed that people and families can be different but that different is not bad, there can be good in different things/people, we don't all have to be the same. I like that Molly appreciated the perspective that she gained through going through a hard time. I also loved her notebook at the end. :)

Most people likely won't mind the issues that I had with it,and those issues were not enough to dissuade me from recommending it or thinking that it is a worthwhile book.

Liked the book; what was wrong with the narrator?

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

I have to agree with the previous reviewer - it was as if the narrator couldn't read - there were endless pauses mid-sentence, as if the reader had reached the end of the line and didn't remember that sentences occasionally carry over lines. She also made mistakes which suggested a lack of thought behind the reading e.g. saying 'Mitt's large bony hand closed over the FIRST that was trying to stab Maewen.' Ok, it's in the kindle text, but does it make sense? No! - and any thinking human being ought to have recognised it. It seems like they've just run the text through some kind of voice generation software. Very disappointing.

Frustrating

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Crown of Dalemark?

It's difficult to say, as in some ways the point of the book is the quest itself. I enjoyed the part where Mitt and Moril ended up in a river by surprise.

How could the performance have been better?

This is the 4th and final book in the series. I do wish that consistency of narrator could be maintained, across all books in a series, as some characters had completely different accents/ voices from previous stories, which had the effect of changing their personality.

The most annoying thing, though, is the curious way in which this narrator mis times punctuation in many, many sentences. It sounds as if she inserts a full stop at the end of a line of text, rather than at the end of the sentence. It really jars, and breaks up the rhythmn of the story.

Need to Fight Off Grumpiness? Take Two Zapple and Review in the Morning.

Recently I had to spend a few days in hospital, and like previous times, I read children's books while there... no better way to fight off the medical grumps than some lighthearted fun, a quality that Elias Zapple has in spades. In fact, this second adventure of Duke & Michel (with more friends) is even more fluidly written than the first,Duke & Michel: The Mysterious Corridor. His conversational style is easily accessible, and a surefire bit of enjoyable reading for preeteens and us (ahem) older folk who cut our teeth on BBC skit comedy like MONTY PYTHON.

Zapple is truly blooming in the field of zany children's entertainment like the majestic wild cabbages of Golden Yore.

Promising

It's a promising sequel with lots of humor. Actually the story is quite different from the first one so that it's not necessary to read the first book before. There are some new funny characters but Duke is still my favourite. The details about the Master disclosed in this book do explain how come he is so evil. And there are some unexpected turns to make the story more dramatic.

A great sequel!

What a fun sequel to "Duke and Michel: The Mysterious Corridor"! I loved the humor, the fast pace, and the unique adventures written in a style that reminds me of Roald Dahl. I enjoyed the first book, and I looked forward to reading this one. Salvador von Virst is a memorable character as is King Tingaling, the gold-leafed walls and all! The theme of a king not being satisfied with his portrait due to lack of dignity in the portrait is always timely and a good lesson on politics and humility for kids of any age. While the characters in the two books overlap, this is its own adventure and can be read on its own. Excellently fun and exciting book!

Fast and furious

So funny! Duke and Michel to the rescue! Deliciously droll, entertaining for all ages!

Original, wild and wonderful

'The King Tingaling Painting' hit me like the space rocket that takes Duke, the talking Basset Hound, and twelve year old Michel on journeys between bizarre worlds. This is a brilliant and infuriating book, characteristics I assume must be shared by the author, Elias Zapple. Yes, yes, I know it's meant for children, but if I hadn't been reading on my kindle I would have thrown it across the room. Instead, I had to content myself with the cyber equivalent, switching my kindle off and on and off and on..... I just had to find out what happened next. However painful.

Duke and Michel, plus Boris the rat, are incredibly funny. The humour is quirky and unpredictable, a constant surprise. I laughed out loud throughout this intense reading experience. At times I cried. The crying times corresponded with the virtual book throwing. I loved Duke and Michel so much that I wanted to have a say in what happens to them. Votes for readers!

Quite an Adventure

This is the first book I've read from the author. It seems that I've come into the series in the middle, so I have downloaded the first book. It was still an enjoyable read.

The imaginative world created by the author is especially fun. Some animals can talk (with attitude!), magic is in the air and emu-like creatures provide fast transportation.

Yes, I realize this series is for children- and they can certainly read it. Just as soon as I'm finished.

basic fun

A simple walk into the world of furry and fairy alike. Enjoyed the character building, as the young boy finds himself in a world with furry pirates, and a feisty fairy princess. Even the villains (as a group,) were only bad because of the main villain of the piece. all in all a nice intro to a simply enchanted world. Hope to see more...
