Kids liked it OK, but didn't love it.
Young hero fights blackmail and corruption in ancient Pompeii
Lucius and Quintus find themselves ordered to accompany a troup of the school's gladiators to Pompeii to compete in a spectacle there just a few days before the famous eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 A.D. Quintus has survived his first official combat and is now a veteranus so he will face off against a local gladiator from Pompeii. But Lucius is puzzled why he was asked to go with the troupe, especially since he finds little to do upon arriving at the gladiator barracks in Pompeii.
Lucius follows his brother to town and there meets a strange little girl with silvery blue eyes who tells him the city will be destroyed soon by fire and ash. She is so convincing Lucius is troubled by her prophecy. When he returns to the barracks, the lanista, Crassus, asks him to deliver a message to the sponsor of the games and see if Lucius can find out what kind of a man this Marcus Nemonius Valens is. Crassus wonders if Valens will be merciful to the gladiators or if he will be the kind of man who will give in to a blood-thirsty crowd and order their death.
When Lucius arrives at the sponsor's villa, he is ushered inside and Valens appears to take a personal interest in him. Valens also claims to have known Lucius' father and speaks kindly of him so Lucius thinks he has found a potential ally in his quest to prove his father's innocence. Valens asks Lucius to come to work for him for a few days if the lanista does not need him and Crassus readily agrees since it will give Lucius a chance to observe the man more closely before the games.
But things are not at all what they seem and, before long, we find both Lucius and Quintus fighting for their lives in a city rife with blackmail and murder overshadowed by loud rumblings from nearby Vesuvius.
Since much of this second novel takes place in the villa of Valens, young readers will learn about Roman patron-client relationships, elite Roman banqueting and the types of food prepared for it, Roman heating systems and aristocratic living spaces. Two of Valens' frequent visitors are competing for a public office so readers will also learn of the generally corrupt nature of Roman politics.
Pompeii itself is accurately described as best as I can remember having been fortunate enough to visit the archaeological site twice. It is also portrayed as a rough-and-tumble almost "frontier" town and this too is accurate.

    Members Reviews:
    Narration kills the story.
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Rerecord it in a proper sound booth. There's hissing and the narrator sounds like the distance form the mic is changing constantly.
A different narrator might not have made the book such a painful listen either.
Would you recommend The Girl Who Has Everything to your friends? Why or why not?
Yes, I think I would. It's a different and somewhat refreshing take on the rich girl theme. I didn't really care for Vickii but again it's not the typical step-mother cliche found in most books.
How could the performance have been better?
The main character is supposed to be 12 but she sounds about six. But it's the recording quality thatneeds to improve.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Girl Who Has Everything?
I don't think I would cut anything. I would have liked to seem some expansion on things though. I mean our main character was at a boarding school and is now being sent to a "normal" (read public) school. This is brushed over in the rush to rach the ending.

Step outside your clique and see what else is out there! Don't be so quick to judge ppl! Loved it, great read for everyone but I really think it's message for teens is great!

Alice art lovers NEED THIS BOOK!!!
I don't even read French but this book makes me want to! Not only does it have the original Alice in Wonderland, but it has more information in the back that I wish I could read!
And the illustrations. I bought this book for the illustrations and I was NOT disappointed!!! The pictures are absolutely GORGEOUS, from the full painting images to the black, white, and red smaller images littered throughout. The fold out poster illustrations were a pleasant surprise and I found myself being extra careful with the pages.
If you are an Alice art lover you NEED THIS BOOK, even if you can't read the language it's written in!!!!
The illustrations are just a joy. I am new to Benjamin Lacombe
This book is so lovely. It is full of little suprises-some of the pages open up to a bigger scene. The illustrations are just a joy. I am new to Benjamin Lacombe. I am so happy I have a new world to explore. I do not speak any french, but love this book any way. I would highly recommend it if you are a Lacombe fan or a Alice fan. I hope this helps you.
    So beautiful. A masterpiece
I love his art so very much! The colors, the lighting--magnificent. The pull out full poster pages were a delightful surprise.

    Great Story and Illustrations
I have probably read this book to my boys 100 times now and they always love Roberto. My youngest son, Elias, wanted to give the book ten stars instead of five.
    Cute story
Really cute story about a termite that follows his dream despite what others say. My son read it to his 3rd grade class and they loved it too. I would say this book is good for 1st-3rd graders.
    An Insect Architect?
I was happy this arrived on time, faster than expected. It came brand new just as it was stated. I find this to be a fun book to read whether you're a child or adult. The pictures are mixed media with collage work. It's not totally crazy that the main character, Roberto, is an insect who happens to be an architect. Some of the world's most architecturally gifted creatures are insects such as ants and termites. Overall, this book should be read by anyone who appreciates art and the insect world.
    We love this book
