At 13, George Stable still hasn't made his mark on the world. Oh, he plays the guitar and sings a little. And he appeared on television for six whole seconds once. A couple of years ago, he even wrote a sort of book, called The Teddy Bear Habit. But nothing really exciting has happened to him. But now, it looks as if his big chance has finally come. This agent of his, Woody Woodward, who discovered him during his six-second TV career, has come up with a plan to make him a hot new guitar-playing teenage star - "George Stable, The Boy Next Door".
Never mind that George has spent his entire life in Greenwich Village, which is not exactly where you'd find your typical "Boy Next Door". As Woody says, it's the image that counts. Of course, there are a few problems to be ironed out. His pop isn't too hot on the idea, and is packing George off to stay with his uncle and creepy cousin Sinclair in upstate New York, while he spends a month in Paris. And Woody's bosses at the record company still have to buy the idea. There's this strange, bug-eyed guy everyone calls Superman who has to give the go-ahead....

    Best Book on Pets Ever!
My kids have loved this book so much they wore it out and I had to buy another copy. I was so sad to see that it was out of print! This is the best book for kids interested in unusual pets. It was very helpful in determining what pets would be the best fit for my kids. Never thought I would have rats and geckos, but turns out they are the perfect fit!
    Extremely Pleased With Extreme Pets
Wanted to find a copy of this book to give as a gift to my niece - she had been fascinated by the copy my son owned. Apparently, the book is no longer in print. The copy we found through Amazon was in terrific condition and arrived exactly when it was supposed to arrive. My niece was thrilled with the book, and I was thrilled with how easy it was to find and order. The price was also right.
    Very nice book
Tabbed sections, heavy construction, colors great. Grandson loved it. Service great, on time, price very reasonable, would purchase again if needed and am always happy with Amazon service and quality of products
    Exceptional Book
Amazing! Gross! and Interesting! Those would be the three words that I would have to use to describe this colorful and educational book. The cover right away makes you take a second glance as you gaze into the eye of a slivering snake, a rat, wiggly worm, hairy spider, and a big fat cockroach. Definitely an attention getter and the perfect cover for what is ahead of you in this read.
Perhaps your child has been asking you to have one of these different pets instead of a sweet little puppy of cute kitten, and you'd like to know a little more about the care of them and just how 'kid friendly' they are. If that is the case, this is the book for you. It is broken down into five sections: Cold Blooded! Pocket Pets! Insects! Slimy Pets! and D.I.Y. Guide.
You can learn what it would be like to have a Corn Snake for a pet and what would be required for it's life and care. How about having a Madagascan Hissing Cockroach to cuddle with? Not sure? Read this book and it will help you make your decision.
I was very impressed with the exceptional photos in this book of each pet discussed and the way in which it was written.

    A Splendid Story
This tale is really a lot of fun, as usual for Wendy Orr. Adults enjoy it also. Should be made into a movie, as was her "Nim's Island."

    Another good read!
I really enjoyed this 2nd book in the series, I needed an easy read with good characters. I've been reading a lot of history lately from the Salem witch trials to the war for independence to Jack the ripper theories... This was a great storyline that left me wanting the next installment right away! I've really enjoyed the first two books.
    Even Better Than The First
Tales from Lovecraft Middle School #2: The Slither Sisters / 1594745935
"Slither Sisters" picks up as the second in this series after "Professor Gargoyle", and I do feel like this installation in the series is even stronger than the first. As a brief recap of the series as a whole: Everyman YA Protagonist Robert Arthur lives in a world much like ours (minus anyone ever having heard of H.P. Lovecraft), except that Cthulhus and Shoggoths are using his middle school as a dimensional vortex for passing between worlds. The series relies heavily on Lovecraftian monsters, but doesn't delve as much into the tone and themes (presumably because this isn't meant to emotionally scar the targeted audience).
"Professor Gargoyle" ended with the revelation that the two missing twins -- Sarah and Sylvia Price -- have "returned" but are really Lovecraftian monsters in human form. "Slither Sisters" picks up from that revelation with the announcement that the girls are running for student body president and, if successful in their campaign, will use their position to kidnap more students for a body exchange. The plot summary sounded a little twee to me, but to its credit the book really manages to make middle school politics something engaging and interesting to get into, possibly because Lovecraftian monsters are summoned left and right to liven things up.
Additionally, there's a lot of new character development around girlfriend Karina and school librarian Ms. Lavinia and I found those side-developments to be genuinely engaging. Everyman Robert Arthur tends to be just-barely-not-bland for me (although younger and/or male readers may feel differently), but fleshing out Karina's existential angst and Ms. Lavinia's unexpectedly horrifying existence went a long way towards guiding this series back to more Lovecraftian themes of isolation and terror, so well done there. Finally, I loved the concluding chapters of this novel.

    Radical, but Rare
This slim (64 pages) volume carries a hefty price tag, but at this point it's worth it, because there isn't a lot on the market covering the dinosaurs-with-feathers subject (so far as I know). Dr. Xu Xing, who wrote the foreward, is a notable character in the unfolding drama of feathered fossils being found in China.
I consider this book a bit radical in that it runs with the theory of dinosaurs being birds (or was it vice versa?), calling them all dinosaurs: nonavian dinosaurs for the "dinosaurs" and avian dinosaurs for the "birds." It is written in a fairly simple and straightforward manner; I think it is a YA title although I mostly bought it for myself (as a parent having just taken the kids to see the James Gurney's Dinotopia exhibit and activites at the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge MA). I think one might want to read it with a child, so that, for example, a younger reader might not end up being teased for insisting that birds are dinosaurs. The theory is out there, it's current, but it's not completely validated yet. I would like to see more well illustrated books on the subject, but this one is a great start.
    excellent tool
Learned a lot about the modern dino, the bird. Great tool to show relationship of hypotheses to evidence found.....I use it in my museum tours, grades 1 thru adult ages. Nice pictures, layout, and enjoyable to read.
    How Dinosaurs Took Flight
This book is filled with great pictures and it is very informative. The author did a wonderful job explaining the differences between avian and nonavian dinosaurs. The hypotheses throughout the book are followed by the evidence that has been found on that topic. It's great reading for aboout 4th grade through adult, and nice for reading with your child also.

    Wonderful Story!
You really, really should allow comment without rating. Five stars for the story. One for formatting.
So far, I've read a little over half this book. It is a wonderful story! It is supposed to be a book for children..but I am really enjoying it.
What I'm NOT enjoying is the horrible lack of formatting. Worst Kindle book I've ever seen in that respect. I can understand a few blips in electronic form, but page after page of sentences being run together as one word. Fragments of sentences stuck in places that don't make sense. Sentences all out of sequence. It is like having to do word games to read a book; very distracting and interrupts the flow of the story. I plan to finish this book. I just hope that it will be fixed so others can enjoy it in the future. Thanks.
    Elephant Girl
I chose this story for my grand daughter elephants are her favorite animal. This story is wonderful and would be a suitable story for young and old. The meaning conveyed was of combatability between species and was very well conveyed now when she visits she will read it hopefully enjoying it as much as I./
    Good read
Elephants are so majestic. To be able to communicate and live with them would definitely be a dream come true.
Very fresh, hard to put down...
Great read! Story has many layers and characters are multidimensional and colorful. The book has magic, adventure as well as new, inventive and unusual concepts. Subject is close to hearts of many of us and storytelling never slows down. Reader is kept on the edge and the book is hard to put down. I read it in one go and stayed up really late to finish it. Illustrations are perfect, too. Visuals support the story without taking over. Very well done - throughout!
Great read for you and your kids
I wasn't sure how I would like this book, being that I'm not a kid. Let me tell you, I read it in one day and loved it. It never gets slow or boring, you fall in love with the characters, and the folklore the author wrote for the book is awesome. This is considered a children's novel, but I think most adults would enjoy it. Along with adventure and magic, it has valuable lessons, and a strong female lead to be inspired by. Definitely give this one a read... or enjoy reading it with your kids.
