Great Gospel Discussion on Religious Liberty

In June B&H began The Gospel for Life Series, edited by Russell Moore and Andrew Walker, which connects the gospel message with everyday life issues. Both Moore and Walker serve at the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC) of the Southern Baptist Convention and, Moore especially, have written and spoken extensively on gospel responses to the ethical issues Christianâs face.

The books are structured around answering five questions: What are we for?, What does the gospel say?, How should the Christian live?, How should the church engage?, What does the culture say? For example, in answering What are we for?, the authors all begin in Genesis with creation. This starting point intentionally grounds all discussion within the framework of creation which is the beginning of the biblical story line of creation, fall, redemption, and re-creation/consummation. This creation starting point helps us to see Godâs intention within these various issues and in turn helps us to see what has gone wrong with them as a result of the fall. Some readers will be challenged by the creational foundations of religious liberty presented by Andrew Walker in the book on The Gospel & Religious Liberty. This was a new concept for me and something I will continue to think about.

Another helpful aspect of this series is how it frames the Christians response within the community of the Church. So, it is not enough for the individual Christian to be equipped to respond to the culture but it is the collective witness of the whole Church, the bride of Christ, that should speak loudly to these issues with the truth of the gospel. For example, when it comes to racial reconciliation, the Church needs to have the conversation about it, yes, even all white churches, because, as Trillia Newbell writes in The Gospel & Racial Reconciliation, âThe problem is, race continues to be talked about because there continue to be problems. And there continue to be problems because often conversations about race revolve around racism. And these conversations centered on racism happen because people are racist. So, until we see an and to racism, both personal and systemic, we will need to continue this conversation.â (49)

One final helpful aspect of this series is its interaction with the current cultural opinion on these issues.

Keeps kids and adults interested!

I wanted a Bible story book to keep my kids in bed while I did my devotions.....this did the trick! My kids are learning to have devotions with this book and Im getting mine done without interuptions! I like that the stories are exactly as the Bible describes. Caution! It doesnt sugar coat any of the Bible stories....my daughter came to me later and said "Did you know Peter was crucified upside down?" We love this book and the kids even ask daddy to read it to them at night.

This Book Belongs on Every Child's Bookshelf! We love it!

The Pearls did a wonderful job on this book. We bought the original black & white version and our children read it many times before it finally fell apart. Since the black & white is no longer available, I purchased the color version. It has the same content that we love. It tells the chronological account of creation to the end times. We all enjoy reading it! My first choice is still the black & white.

A great help

Excellent graphic novel. I already owned a copy of it, but ordered this one for a friend who is interested in getting started in reading the Bible, but wants to graphics to help him get a better grasp of it through visual applications. A great help to someone who hates reading to get a better understanding of the Bible on their first experience of it.

I love the way Josh Kelly thinks/writes and was entertained as well as challenged by his audiobook "Radically Normal". Through interesting observations and fun storytelling he questions common assumptions and presumptions many Christians maintain while pointing to a vivid new horizon that may push the envelope for some readers.

Im not a strong reader, so If i had read the book myself i would have put the book down before it was over. Having Josh tell the story was like sitting with a freind at a Starbucks shop and having a casual conversation.

It didn't make me laugh or cry but opened my mind to a new way of looking at my faith.

Too deep for my shallow mind.

I'm unable to understand and follow the meaning of what Neville has written here. I've enjoyed and felt that I understood many of his earlier books, but this, be it mysticism or whatever, was to mystifying for this reader.

This guidebook is insightful and helpful. By the help of this book I have learned lots about Jesus. This is a Christian life study guidebook and it is very well written. My favorite is Max Lucadoâs Grace for the Moment

I read daily devotions. My favorite is Max Lucadoâs Grace for the Moment. It was so inspiring and challenging at the same time. In comparison, I find the formatting of this book a little distracting, too many spaces in between paragraphs. Content-wise, the day to day devotion is okay. But to have only thirteen days in all is not enough. We have 365 days in a year and thatâs a total of 365 daily devotions. Thereâs room for improvement here if the goal is to really grow in a relationship with Jesus.

Though most of us are too busy with our daily lives. We should consider making a good relationship with our creator. As for my part, I would start it by having a Bible study session with my family and this book comes in handy. It gave me a good guide in which to start and progress daily. I will surely keep this one as reference and will definitely keep this as my guide in developing my relationship with the almighty. I highly recommend this to other readers as well.

I loved the thesis

Michael offers such an important perspective on this issue. This book imparts the spirit of a true Peace Maker. The conflict is two sided and we need to understand it so we can take up our role as peace makers and peace brokers. Michael navigates this issue with such clarity and impartiality. I highly recommend Michael Onifer's treatise on Israel, God Israel and You. Michael's systematic, thorough and very readable approach to an overview of the plight of the Arab and Jew (and world for that matter) is factually eye-opening. This refreshing work encourages us to enlarge our perspective about what has and is going on in the Middle East (and world) today. I believe that this book should be read by everyone interested in traveling to the Holy Land or simply wanting answers to "what in the world is going on".

What did you love best about Voices, Visions, Apparitions - Angels & Saints: The Lives of the Saints?

I liked that it told the stories of devout Catholics in their own words. It recounted the visions that they saw. Some I believe are genuine, others I believe are demonic apparitions. It is interesting to hear about the devotional life of people of other religions.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I would have like more background information to set the stage. A layman's explanation of the importance of these visions to the Catholic Church would also have been helpful.

He gave a good performance. His voice fit nicely with the story.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I really like the story of Genesius' conversion. It is a very cool story.

Where does Don't Forget the Part About the Sheep and the Goats rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

It is one of the best books I've listened to by Jon Zens. I would put this on par with "What's Up with Paul and Women" and "A Church Building Every Half a Mile"--in other words, this is some of his best work.

What did you like best about this story?

Zens gently but powerfully takes on universalism and other false gospels. He lays out the Scriptural case clearly and boldly.

What about Dorothy Deaverss performance did you like?

Her voice lends authority to the work. There is something both charming and appropriate about having a woman read Jon Zens' work and make the case against universalism. It is very much in line with his beliefs. She gave an excellent performance

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I particularly enjoyed the discussion of hell and the final judgment. I believe Zens made a good case for annihilationism.
