Excellent, gripping story of conquering drug and alcohol addiction
I have gotten to know Clay Cornelius through a small neighborhood church where we shared ministry together. Knowing that he had written a book, I offered to exchange a copy of Persuaded by the Evidence for a copy of his book.
The Committee left me with a sense of amazement. I donât remember ever seeing an approach to writing as unique as what he has accomplished. This is a story of Clayâs fight with alcohol, drugs and lust, first by recounting the reality of what was happening in his life, and then by playing a recap of what was going on in his life represented by members of a committee in his mind, negotiating for control.
The initial members of his committee were allegorized as Life, Happiness, Pleasure, Logic, and Conscience. Pleasure was chairman of the board, and pretty much dictated all affairs. By the time he was 22, Competition, Finance, Society and Health were added to the committee. Pleasure, with support of Society and Logic, ruled the committee and supported anything that would cause him to feel good.
Clay talks about his entry into the world of alcohol and drug use, under the influence of Pleasure. To the outside world, Clayâs life looked stable, but inside a battle raged to maintain the very structure of his being.
Committee meetings were infrequent, and Conscience was the first to report that something was wrong. The other members of the committee didnât think much of Conscienceâs comments at first, but after a number of events got Clayâs attention, the committee began to question the direction his life was taking.
âSomething was wrong, and I couldnât deny it. Pieces of my life that were really important to me were beginning to slowly disintegrate.â
Society had convinced the committee over the objection of Finance that it was necessary to trade in his Plymouth Colt Vista (not so cool) for a really hip Ford Expedition. But while under the influence, he totals it when he attempts to avoid hitting a deer. Life, who had quietly remained in the background of the committee, began to agree with Conscience that something must be done, and suggested that God might be the answer.
Pleasure, Logic and Society were not too keen on the idea, and Finance protested, but took on the challenge Life suggested to contribute to the church. This did not make sense to Logic, but he grudgingly went along with it.
The partying, drug and alcohol use, and a live-in girlfriend were all suggested by Pleasure, and led to a number of near catastrophes. An overdose and the loss of his girlfriend caused Happiness to be at a new low, and a new urgency came over the committee.
During one of these meetings, Logic introduced a new member, named Greater Good. Under his influence, the committee began to consider the consequences of this lifestyle over the long term.
