believeable syfy

enjoyed the trip with the main character....old story line, with very interesting foresight into what the future can hold for us with technology.....easy to see sequel possibilities. read about author and book in my University of Delaware Alumni magazine...glad I looked it up and got it so quickly on my Kindle.

A Wake Up Call For Families

I read Waiting in the Silence with a bit of fear and trepidation. I was not sure I was ready to glimpse into the potential future of our society. Our business puts us in touch with people from all over the world. We've seen firsthand how technology is changing the way we interact and form our social bonds. In the last 6 years we have witnessed families stop talking over the dinner table, instead they are glued to their personal computer devices (PCD). Ms. Berne's words flow and weave a future world where humans have lost independence; the earth is not a solid 3 dimensional place any longer, where nanotechnology has replaced substance. Ms. Berne brings up topics for ethical discussions that we should be talking about today. It should be required reading for every person who feels utterly connected to their PCD!

Waiting for the sequel!

I loved this book! It was an excellent, captivating story of the dangers of allowing technology to run our lives and eliminate the need to interact with nature. The author did a fantastic job of including the reader in the character's journey to enlightenment about the world she lives in. I was hooked from start to finish and found myself immediately hoping for more installments after it was over! If you're looking for a great sci fi read with the added bonus of renewing your appreciation for the world around you, this book is for you!

I considered it a futuristic mystery.

I loved the way the author mixed facts with what could possibly be true one day. The flash back technique helped to add to the suspense. I love books that don't allow me to figure out the ending. The book ended as though their might be a sequel. Not everyone in my book club read enough to get into the book. After our discussion many planned to read it.

Thought Provoking

An excellent read! I highly recommended - A really terrific nano-science fictional novel - The first I'd read! I love that it takes place in Nantucket - just a boat ride from me. I look forward to the next book!

Every Book She Writes Is Better Than The One Before

I was EXTREMELY impressed by this book. Sandra has crafted an amazing story that manages to stand alone and follow up logically on the first book, and unlike many sequels which drag a bit or feel the need to simply move the plot forward, this book actually picked up steam and got more interesting with each page.

The main character, Paul, is one of the most believable characters I have come across in a sci-fi novel, and the cast of people Sandra puts around him are equally well-drawn. What I especially like, though, is the emotional connection Sandra makes me feel, both the emotions the characters have for each other and the way she makes a reader care about them. There is a scene in the book where Cass, the younger sister of the protagonist, learns some dismaying news about some musicians she likes, and I felt bad for Cass hearing the news, just as I would for a real person suffering real news.

As good as the characters are, they still need a story to build around them, and Sandra doesn't disappoint there. I've said before that she is as good a world-builder as you will find, and the two universes she sets up here are phenomenal, as is the way she has them interrelate to each other. She manages to make 20th-century Earth seem both perfectly familiar and oddly unfamiliar, while somehow making the spaceship many of the characters live in and the alternate, future Earth just the opposite.

And the science! The science is great: she invents things that help actors and wormholes in space and weird future medicines and then comes up with the "Catalyst Quirk," which is incredibly interesting and deserves even more attention than it got in here. But she makes it all seem perfectly normal, the way laptops or cellphones are just part of our life even though they're technological wonders.

I can't say enough good stuff about this book And in proper trilogy fashion, the ending seems to build towards something even bigger on the horizon. This is as good as science fiction gets.

Well performed and addictive story with strong characters. Osiris is a well conceived world wonderfully brought to life by Swift's elegant prose. I look forward to the sequel being recorded.

Girl Power!

Dev is a female spaceship captain stuck on a jerkwater planet where the natives live in mortal terror of their omniscient and omnipotent gods. One of her crew decides to curse out the gods in a drunken fit, and he gets vaporized by one of their 'angels'. Dev, always logical and sensible, has no belief in gods and assumes that some powerful entities are masquerading as gods in order to exploit the superstitious and backward locals. She discovers that these 'gods' are holed up in a nearby mountain complex and decides to pay them a visit.

A very entertaining and thought-provoking book with a definite feminist slant. Simple enough to be enjoyed by older kids, but sophisticated enough to be enjoyed by adults, as well. There is also enough action and suspense to keep the pages turning, and the climax where Dev finally meets the 'gods' is very satisfying. I've read this book multiple times at different ages and enjoyed it immensely each time.

Is the narrator drunk?

The story is very well written and interesting I was hooked after a few minutes.

I normally prefer listening to audio books but I had to switch to kindle for this one.

The narrator killed the book and mood totally.

I can't decide if the narrator is drunk or he is trying to be dramatic or just is that bad. Especially when he is narrating the killer character he sounds like he is drunk. The other characters are bad but not as bad as killer

Extra information and history that is interesting if you enjoyed the movie or are a fan - well written adaptation

I bought this for amusement after seeing the movie and on a flight somewhere.

It is an interesting adaptation of the movie, pretty close on most accounts.

The interesting thing that does make it somewhat more enjoyable for those that might be fans is that throughout the book there are chapters inserted that are flashbacks throughout history to other points in the Raige family timeline, showing how the family become prominent in human history.

It made the story a lot more interesting than just the basic movie plot.

The Author did take a bit of poetic licence as well and add a few bits to the movie as well to add a bit of interest to the novel also.

Overall, it was an interesting read if you are a fan of the movie and the concept, and well worth getting if you enjoyed the movie.

Slow start

I didn't get enthused about this boot until I had gotten to the part where they arrived on old earth. However, the first part is sort of required for the character development of the kid. I'm looking forward to seeing the movie. Congratulations to the author!

I caught the movie in tv the other night and I realized why it was a flop. Instead of focusing on the strained relationship between father and son, it was marketed as another Will Smith over the top blockbuster epic sci fi extravaganza. I was interested in what was clearly missing from the movie, and I found exactly what I was looking for in this book. The science fiction was interesting enough, but the actual story itself was worth the read.
