This week we begin a two feature focusing on the accordion. Back in those pre-cable days, we had very few TV stations to choose from, so, frequently, all through our neighborhood almost every homes was tuned to The Lawrence Welk Show. We found ourselves exposed to the accordion on that program as well as every wedding reception and ice cream festival I attended as a kid. It was years until I realized how very cool and versatile the accordion is. The next two programs demonstrate the many voices of the accordion as a lead and accompaniment instrument. When I was younger, I was disappointed when a folk music album included orchestrations behind the player or band. I hadn't given it much of a thought lately but with the release of “When the Day the Day is Done: The Orchestrations of Robert Kirby” on Ace Records I came to the realization that in the right hands orchestral arrangements can be quite lovely. Robert Kirby added string and horn parts to some of my favorite recordings. This week on the Sing Out!
