"Why didn't you reach out?" People always wanted to know. "Didn't you know someone would have helped?" During the domestic violence, my abuser made every attempt to destroy my reputation and to make me believe that I was alone. And after a while, that's exactly what I was--alone. From convincing people that I was the monster to cutting me off from everyone and everything I knew, over time I had to rely on myself more and more.

A question I was always asked was, "How did you end up with someone like that?" I didn't fall in love with an abusive man; I fell for the mask that the narcissist wears. I wanted to begin my story by sharing how I ended up on a path that was bound to lead me in the wrong direction and to the wrong person. This episode may be difficult for some listeners, so discretion is advised.
