Slovakia Today, English Language Current Affairs Programme from Slovak Radio

In today’s world marked by coronavirus outbreaks, people seem to be more concerned about their health than ever before. Regarding the current situation, it is only natural that everyone tries to stay as fit as possible, boosting their immune system with fruits, vegetables or even various food supplements. Without any doubts, our eating habits have a strong impact on our health. Therefore, in the first part of today’s programme, we will take a look at the health benefits as well as the risks of a vegan diet with two nutrition specialists, Adela Penesová and Milan Sedliak. In the second part, however, we will look back at the Livre Paris 2019 book fair where Bratislava was selected as the city of honor.

Due to the measures taken for diminishing the impact of coronavirus in our country, some parents have to stay home as schools were closed in Bratislava and its vicinity. That is why we present you a rerun show in which you can learn about Slovak fairy tales and about some of the most famous Jozefs in the country as 19th March marks their nameday on Slovak calendars.

On March 14, we have observed the anniversary of the creation of the wartime Slovak state. American historian Madeline Vadkerty works on an interesting research connected to the correspondence of the wartime Slovak president, Jozef Tiso.

Since "containing" the coronavirus is clearly no longer possible, the goal now is to avoid the kind of horrific scenario seen in Italy, where it has spread so fast that hospitals are not able to treat many incoming patients who need life-saving care. Like in most countries, Slovakia's efforts to reduce social contact between its residents is directed specifically to achieving that goal. In an effort to better understand the nature of the situation I speak with Boris Klempa, an award-winning expert in the study of virology at the Slovak Academy of Sciences. Brano Sitar is a nuclear scientist who has worked closely for the past 25 years with the international organisation CERN, where cutting-edge research on sub-atomic particles is giving scientists new insights into the very first moment of the existence of the Universe, less than a microsecond after the Big Bang.

News and topical issue. The show is dedicated to the International Women's Day, which we have observed only a few days ago, and to various issues highlighting the role of women in society. The show is a rerun of a special 1 January programme, so if you have not caught it, look forward to us discussing the 100 years of voting rights for women in Czechoslovakia. We will also look back at the 150th anniversary of the establishment of Živena, the first and also longest running women’s organisation in Slovakia. Then speak about how to present great women from Slovak history to younger audiences and also delve into the more problematic issues, such as the ever high ratio of women who have experienced violence.

Artificial Intelligence seems to be taking over not only the sciences but society itself. In just the past few years, many people have begun to feel that its rapid growth in nearly every sector of society poses a kind of threat - that simply put, this technology is going to advance, with or without our having any say in just how it develops. One serious response to this here in Slovakia is the existence of Slovak.AI, an organisation still in its infancy. I spoke with two of its leaders at a conference organised by the group in early March. What would make a young man with an all-consuming passion for theoretical physics take on a second all-consuming passion - the monumental task of adopting and raising several Roma children from eastern Slovakia? We talk to Daniel Nagaj of the Slovak Academy of Sciences to find out.
