On this episode of SMACTalk, hosts Daniel Newman (@danielnewmanuv) and Brian Fanzo (@isocialfanz) bring us the show in conjunction with our partner MobCon Digital Health. MobCon Digital Health is an event put on by the team at MobCon, focused exclusively on digital health and advances in technology that impact health, wellness, and business. Featuring presentations by some of the top minds and most innovative folks in the digital health space, it's sure to be a terrific event and we're proud to be a media partner.
During the show, Dan and Brian discuss the following:
The Medical Internet of Things. With the mass consumer adoption of wearables, sensors, and so forth, what implications does that have as it relates to data? The answer: many!
Can Big Data Help With Diagnostics? This is fascinating stuff, for sure. At least it is for tech geeks like us. Dan and Brian touch on the overall usage of Big Data in modern medicine, reducing the need for trial-and-error medicine, cost savings in healthcare, potential pitfalls such as privacy issues/patient information. This is where the importance of data comes into play and where dirty data can lead to lost revenue and lost opportunities.
How to Win at the Digital Health Game. The future of Digital health is huge business, with $7.4 billion flowing into the space since 2010. How to capitalize? Dan and Brian talk about why digital healthcare entrepreneurs are looking directly to consumers nowadays and also discuss regulatory issues.
It's a great episode and if you're interested in the digital health space, we'd love your thoughts.
2015 has been an exciting year for the hosts as of SMACtalk Live as Daniel Newman and Brian Fanzo have the opportunity to travel the world speaking at numerous events as well as attending as influencers. This isn't news to many of our listeners as we've been doing our best to broadcast live from the event, live tweet keynotes, blog about our experiences and even meerkat and periscope these events to hopefully add value to your digital community.
With all these events the biggest disappointment has been the lack of focus event professionals and attendee's have when it comes to creating a mobile event app, connecting with the digital community as well as leveraging the offline data to build a 365 day community beyond the live event. Not all events that we have attended this year are bad at this but few have a complete solution. On episode 24 of SMACtalk Live we explain...
Why Offline Events Must Create Online Digital Experiences!
Show Notes:
Daniel explains why..
Digital must transcend the event and the hashtag and community must live on!
At the end of the day it's about....

On this episode of smack talk Live Daniel and Brian discuss what Brian saw as the most important topics and trends at SXSW this week.
Beyond the ever popular Meerkat app which the smack talk team was using to give behind the scenes views of this episode the biggest takeaways in Brian’s mind were the importance of being a digital business and having a digital front door while understanding the importance of data and also what the future of the change agent looked like and a link between the change agent and companies that have a digital philosophy.
Daniel discusses some of his recent feedback and questions and concerns that he still hears about people not understanding what it means to be a social business. This is a great example of how companies that don’t understand new technology and haven’t been built or transform their culture to embrace it struggled to keep up with change.
They discuss the idea of ROI in the importance of leaders today especially those who are change agents in linking Data to business success metrics to prove the value of what is trying to be changed. Brian brings up a great example in the app Meerkat as the app came to the market one week prior to SXSW events but because she was listening and embrace this new technology he was able to create a strategy that included targeted data and get a sponsor to jump on board and seeing the value of this less than two week old app.
So the future of the change agent might be linked to digital culture and digital front door that is a foundation built on data but before we get that far we must teach and embrace what a change agent is and no not every millennial is a change agent.
The takeaway for this episode has to be that in order to embrace digital components such as social media mobility big data and analytics and cloud computing the business first must focus on creating a culture and philosophy that is built around change. So no not every brand should be on snapchat or be Meerkatting all day every day but if you as a leader or if a business does not know what you’re Meerkat is because they have no video strategy they would’ve never been able to embrace this new technology and the speed required to provide value.
In order to react in this real-time culture, at the right time, you must have a philosophy and strategy that embraces change, empowers those who are leading change and encrouages employees to fail fast.
In this episode of SMACTalk, my co-host Brian Fanzo and I discuss the "Digital Disconnect" experience that we both shared when we headed to Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
As two highly technology dependent millennials, we share how we reacted to finding out that we wouldn't have internet access for nearly half a day, and whether or not disconnecting from digital is something we should strive to do more often.
Prior to embarking on our journey overseas, we both came across a number of people (ironically online) who felt that this was one of those "important" opportunities for us to be alone with our thoughts. However, both Brian and I found ourselves in a bit of a panic because we knew there was work to be done and conversations to be had.
As we further flesh out this topic, we found ourselves discussing that really it comes down to each individual. Some people respond extremely well to being disconnected, while others do not. And if being disconnected adds enormous stress then perhaps that isn't the best approach.
We concluded that the keys to understanding your individual need to be connected (or disconnected) are as follows.
Priorities: What are the most important things that need to get done and where does your digital universe stand in comparison to your physical one. At times being more or less connected depends on whom you are with and what your are trying to get done.
Preference: If being connected makes you feel better and you prefer to operate in a constant state of connectedness, perhaps taking long periods to disconnect isn't ideal.
Productivity: Depending on your role, being connected may be critical to performing. If being digitally disconnected minimizes your productivity then why would you disconnect?
Notifications (Management): Maybe the best thing you can do, and Brian is terrific at this is manage your notifications so that what shows up on your device home screen doesn't overwhelm your life. There are critical messages/inputs and less important ones. By making yourself actively seek the less important ones you can be "less connected" at times but know you aren't missing anything super important.
So check out the show…we also dig into wearables, next generation email and an inaugural appearance for myself on Meerkat...
On this episode of SMACtalk I (Co-host @iSocialFanz) geek out about wearable tech specifically the smart watches and Daniel (@DanielNewmanUv) weighs in as a proud watch collector but not fully sold on the smartwatch options. Not only could Daniel’s mind be changing but with the most recent Pebble, LG & Huawei watch announcements, the continued development of Android Wear and the Apple Watch announcement 2015 could be the year of the watch!
We also talk about what we saw here at Mobile World Congress 2015 and what expect to see Monday from Apple as they roll out the Apple Watch but the focus of the discussion is really around how smartwatches are changing how we thinking about technology and how this will impact businesses of all sizes.
Smartphone and Smartwatch hardware without question dominated a majority of the exhibitor tables this week at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona Spain. But Daniel and I believe smartwatches like early smartphones (Blackberry, iPhone), will one day be looked at as very “dumb” innovations as it takes a couple years, a couple software upgrades and some trial and error to really create a game-changing device. So does that mean the Apple Watch won’t be a game changer or that you shouldn’t buy one like we plan on doing? No but you should think about the use cases, the available features and ultimately are you
As you’ll hear in this episode and have learned over these last 20 episodes of SMACtalk, we love to debate and challenge how technology not only will fit in our daily workflow, but also how it will empower and impact the future of work.
We discussed these smartwatch topics:
Style vs Functions
Smartwatch or a Phone on Your Wrist
Wearables in the workplace
Wearables as an action point not an end point?
New data available thanks to wearable but will the user and brands find authentic ways to utilize this data in a transparent way?
We also decided to embrace a new app, as technology evangelists and true geeks, we setup the new app Meerkat, which allows you to live tweet video as you’ll hear us discuss, it seems like a cool trend and something we will leverage and find new ways to utilize in the future.
How will smartwatches, better yet, internet of things, wearable technology and all other gadgets impact and create a new way to work? I don’t believe we have the answer but we are certainly excited about the future and believe the combination of embracing change and leveraging data will be a major factor in which businesses are successful in 2015 and beyond.
As always we are grateful to be able to share our insights and views with you the listener, and welcome feedback, suggestions and open conversation at all times using the hashtag #SMACtalk.

Live at #MWC15 Personalization the Biggest Mobile Trend Nobody is Talking About! #SMACtalk Ep 19
In this episode of SMACtalk Live, Daniel and Brian bring you a personalized story about, well, personalization, straight from Mobile World Congress live 2015 in Barcelona, Spain.
Mobility is a very hot topic. Just walk the floor of any event, go to the store, look at the driver next to you, or consider how you interact with technology throughout the day. People no longer wait an instant to be connected as their devices allow them to be dialed in and engaged around the clock.
At Mobile World the themes have been hot new devices, Internet of Things, Network Function Virtualization and a whole lot more devices (did we say that)? But one of the things that people aren’t talking about (much), is how mobility is capable of creating more personalized experiences that can improve everything from how we attend events, to how we shop, to how we deal with a glut of content that overwhelms our lives on a daily basis.
Here in Barcelona, there are 85,000+ of us connected, using our devices to navigate the event, connect socially, stay in touch with work and so much more and the events team that put on the show have done some tremendous things with mobile, beacon technology and geo-localization to make events better for all of us.
Brian, for instance, loves to utilize (life-hack) every application that can make an experience a bit better. Often that means a lot of time on his end trying to figure out how to glue multiple apps with no real common integration together to do so. The Mobile World application allowed for him to improve his experience by eliminating the need for him to utilize his paper badge, then by liking certain exhibitors he wanted to see, he would not only get useful updates about that the vendor was showing, but also be notified when he was in proximity of the booth and even receive a 3D map rendering to his phone to improve his experience.
This type of technology can be utilized for so much more though. As we opt into content, engage with companies online or utilize wearables, all of that data can be used to collect information to make our experience better; especially mobile. For instance, we could receive content that is more mobile friendly when we are mobile, or reorganize what notifications we receive when we are away from our offices versus when we are home. Think about it…How long is a new email, new?
Mobile has the power to create a new level of personalization in not only events, but in life. We can better engage our employees and our customers by making sure that we put timely information in front of them on the right device, in the right format based upon what they really need, not just what we want to send them.
Another great example of mobile, data and cloud driving a whole new world of possibility for business.

In the most recent episode of SMACtalk Live, Daniel and Brian dig into the myths that surround the millennial generation. We have all heard some of these myths; such as Millennials wanting to do everything online or that the generation as a whole are "Job Hoppers" that have no loyalty to their organization.
In case you didn't already know, by 2020, Millennials will comprise 50% of the workforce and by 2030 that number will skyrocket to a staggering 75%. With this in mind, companies are more interested than ever in better understanding what drives millennials to perform in the workplace.
With this in mind, IBM deployed a global study encompassing more than 1700 Millennial workers from around the world to try and find out if the aforementioned myths amongst others are in fact true. After all, many times myths and stereotypes have some merit, but in the case of this most recent study, it turns out that much of what the people "Thought" was the case for Millennials just wasn't so.
Interested in hearing what the myths uncovered were? Here they are…in our own words.
1. Are Millennials more digital savvy than there more experienced counterparts?
2. Do Millennials require constant acclaim and "Back Patting" from their bosses?
3. Can Millennials survive a few hours away form their technology to go out and talk to people?
4. Are Millennials able to make independent decisions or do they require constant feedback from their "Networks?"
5. Will Millennials jump ship faster than their counterparts if a job isn't fulfilling their passion?
Interested in the results? If you click here (https://ibm.biz/MillennialMyths ) you can download the entire study.
What we will say is that the findings very well may (or may not) surprise you. And the conversation was a fun one as Brian and myself, two Millennials weigh in on each of these myths from our own point of view.
Perhaps before listening, take a minute and think about your perceptions on each of these myths. and of course, we genuinely appreciate all of you that take the time to listen to the show!

Shelly discusses the importance of connecting social media to brand strategy and connecting those to a business strategy.
They also break down the importance of connecting your live event audience and presenters with your digital and social media strategy. No matter the industry event you must have twitter handle and/or hashtag of the event on your slides. Shelly explains how important it is to make it easy for your audience and community to share your content and having them mention you give you the presenter conversation and relationship starters.
“Feed your audience by making it easy for them to share and amplify your content!” - @ShellyKramer
Also discuss the need to be brand strategist not just social strategist
Focus on things like:
Social Media isn't just about marketing anymore
They also discuss the need to break down silos on where brands can find value of social media and engaging the community. When brands and marketing teams leverage social media to cram marketing and sales messages down the throats of their followers their missing the point!
“Marketing does more than just create customers today in 2015!” - @DanielNewmanUV
They discuss the impact of big data on marketing data and the importance of context and story around data being a big part of business strategy and it's need to be linked to business outcomes!
