Welcome to the latest episode of the Smarter Business Podcast. Today, we have Sean Lewis of the SLC advisory group and we're gonna talk a little bit about loving your business. So, Sean, let's start with a hello, how do you do?
- Good, how are you doing?
- Great, your camera setup looks awesome too.
- Thanks, you know I had a lot of help from an expert.
- So, Sean, I'm gonna let you introduce yourself and your company. Whenever you're ready, go for it.
- All right. So I'm Sean and I started SLC advisory group about close to a year now. And really with the belief that we share experiences and provide supports to help business owners change their businesses from something that owns them to a format that they own and love, right? Business owners are typically buried by their businesses, are unhappy, don't wanna show up for their own business, so we provide a support structure and a set of experiences to help them change that.
In this podcast, John Osberg chats with John Gavigan of Endeavor Western New York, an organization that is set out to create support systems for high impact entrepreneurs. Gavigan talks about the entrepreneurial ecosystem, the importance of health, and knowing when to say, "you don't know."

Neil Carroll [00:00:05] Hi, in this episode of the Smarter Business Podcast, John Osberg chats with John Gavigan of Endeavor Western New York, an organization that is set out to create support systems for high impact entrepreneurs. John Osberg [00:00:41] Hi, everyone. This is another episode of the Smarter Business Podcast.
John Osberg [00:00:45] I'm John Osberg, a local entrepreneurial business professional, and I am so excited to have my number one mentor and great friend, John Gavigan of Endeavor Western York joining us today. John, welcome.
John Gavigan [00:00:57] Thanks, buddy. It's good to have you here.
John Osberg [00:00:59] I'm excited to have you man.
John Gavigan [00:01:00] Look at me and you.
John Osberg [00:01:01] Here we are. Here we are.
John Gavigan [00:01:02] We're gonna go.
John Osberg [00:01:03] JGOZ. J G and O Z.
John Gavigan [00:01:07] Like it.
John Osberg [00:01:08] So. So, John, you know, love the energy first of all, I'm hoping there's enough bandwidth in this place to, you know, put up with the energy output that's about to happen here. But Johnny, walk us through what you're up to right now.
[00:01:22] You know, tell us actually a little bit first, you know, where you've been, what you've done and where your going.
[00:01:26] Yeah, well, right now, I'm proud to say I took a new role back in September with a great global organization called Endeavor Global. We're supporting regional companies with global resources.
[00:01:40] And it's a perfect time for this type of organization to be in our community supporting entrepreneurs. The reason why you and I met was because we're both entrepreneurs and we love the business community. And, you know, I was, of course, running 43 North for a bunch of years and it started off as an entrepreneur for many years. And this is just, you know, Endeavor is just like another step in my journey, supporting, loving and being a part of the entrepreneurial community. And I'm really happy that it's here. I'm really happy that I'm doing it.
We took the plunge and recorded a Zoom-based podcast this past week. Partly because one of our close partners had a big announcement, partly because Paul Greiner had a big announcement and partly because we had a big announcement.
So, it is announcements all around on this episode of the Smarter Business Podcast, and of course, at least one thing that made Dan's business smarter.

Neil K Carroll - Hey, welcome to this, the first Smarter Business Podcast that we're recording via Zoom because we're all still stuck at home. And on this episode of the Smarter Business Podcast, we actually have two guests. We have Paul Greiner, who, anybody who's watched probably already knows. Paul's got a bit of an announcement today, and then we have Dan Wangelin from Renoun Creative. Renoun Creative is a great partner to Vidwheel, we do a lot of work with them, and they have some really exciting news about a big launch that they're doing. So, Dan, I will give you a moment to just go ahead and introduce yourself and you can tell us a little bit about what Renoun does.
Dan Wangelin - So, I'm the owner and founder or Renoun Creative, I founded the company in 2006. Back then, it was I was had a full-time position, so I like to say that I had a nine to five and then Renoun Creative was my five to nine. But really, it was more like, seven to 2:30 in the morning. But long story short, we've grown the company now to be an agency of six people with a really solid roster of clients. We have clients all over the US. And recently, we've relaunched ourselves as the customer success agency. And what that means basically, is we identified a long time ago that, we have certain deliverables that people think of us for branding, websites, print design, graphic design, which is great, but ultimately, people need that work to work for them, they need a return on that. So it was a natural progression to go from design, to marketing, and then marketing creates leads and then what we're doing is we're gonna start helping people manage those leads, so they can actually convert to sales and then after that, and they're a customer, helping those customers actually become a referral source. So it really we talked about the Flywheel and HubSpot of it, it's really kind of that idea where not only are we creating the initial deliverables and creating marketing plans, get some marketing execution, but then ultimately, really creating something that reduces churn, increases revenue, helps people be more profitable because we make them more efficient with the resources that they have and really helping them deliver true value in terms of their sales and marketing.
Neil K Carroll - Why don't you tell I guess, the listeners and watchers why we brought Paul in on this kind of Renoun Creative Podcast.

Neil K Carroll - Welcome to the latest episode of the "Smarter Business" podcast. This episode is one of the last ones that we were able to record before the onset of the COVID pandemic. So enjoy this one, in studio, with Paul Greiner of vidwheel, Jack Greco and Clark Dever of Techstars, Buffalo. The three talk about agile planning, fostering a strong startup community in Buffalo, and Techstars itself. The conversation is great, especially if you're in the startup community. And if you like what you hear, share this with your friends.
Paul Greiner - Well, thanks for coming out, guys. It's great to have you here. And let's actually--
Clark Dever - Thanks for having us.
Paul - Greiner - Let's just start by you introducing yourself, your organization and a little bit about how you came to end up where you are.
Jack Greco - Cool, you wanna go first?
Clark Dever - Sure. My name's Clark Dever. I'm the program director at Techstars in Buffalo, longtime community organizer in Buffalo and startup community. Been at it around 10 years as a volunteer. Founded companies, been the first employee in at a couple companies. Done some entrepreneurship. So just kind of the wide background that I had between organizing events and people, and then my experience building things from zero to one, is kind of what brought me on board.
Jack Greco - Cool, I'm Jack Greco. I am the executive director and tag-team partner of Clark for Techstars. I moved to Buffalo about five years ago. I was a co-founder at a local company called ACV Auctions. Prior to that, and even during that, I really worked with and supported founders in genesis activities. So starting the company, getting the company up and running. I wore a lot of different hats and played a lot of different roles. Involved in the community in a different way, probably much more one-on-one, where Clark was more of an instigator and collaborator of large groups. I'm really excited with some of the stuff we're doing at Techstars.
Paul Greiner - Cool.
Jack Greco - And we're both dads.
Paul Greiner - Oh. That's important, too.
Jack Greco - Yeah.
Paul Greiner - Yeah, that's a part of your life, right?
Jack Greco - Yes. Small part.
In this podcast, Paul Greiner sits down with Mike Davern, partner, and CEO of Incept, a digital marketing firm. Mike and Paul talk about what is new in digital marketing, the role that video plays in marketing, as well as going over the process with clients.

- We do.
- Yeah, it's insane.

Now, you might notice that this looks a lot different than past episodes. If you're watching this on video. Francine Brooks [00:01:13] All right, thanks. My name is Francine Brooks. I'm the owner of FB Displays and Designs located here in the Buffalo area. We've been in business for 25 years. Actually, last year it's been 25 years, and it's been a rollercoaster ride most of the time because that's what business is all about. What we do is we design and build exhibits for companies that attend trade shows or any type of face to face marketing event. It could be a sponsorship event. It could be a conference. But as long as it's an event where you need to brand your business, make people aware of who you are, and what you do, we design a display that does that for you. Yes, so, but we do focus on displays that are more modular in nature as opposed to custom. We don't have a shop. We do have a little shop, but not a big one.
