Christine Howard: Yeah, I do all the things. No, it's E.B. Howard Consulting and we are a full service, non-dilutive, development and evaluation company. And that's a lot to take in right there. So what we do three things, really, three services or products for our clients. We help them find funding, non-dilutive funding, meaning they're not going to take equity out of their company or their program or their project to get that funding. The second thing we do is help them prepare for that funding. And that might mean proposal preparation or helping them with the documentation behind the scenes. And then the third thing is evaluation. So a lot of times when there are public dollars involved, the funder wants reporting. Did you do what you said you were going to do with the dollars? Did you meet your goals and objectives? If you didn't, that's OK. But we want evidence that you made strides towards those and that's evaluation in a nutshell. So yeah, we find it apply for and measure it. Our target audience tends to be STEM based organizations, meaning they're trying to solve social, environmental or just industrial problems that are going to benefit the community in some way, shape or form. And it could be Higher Ed, could be K through 12, could be a nonprofit organization, but a lot of our clients are startups that are doing things from maybe they're working on cardiovascular technique, you know, stroke treatment. Sure, maybe it's cancer treatment. Maybe it's, you know, real time water contamination detections or maybe it's something in the Department of Defense sphere.
This episode, we're trying something new, this time, a friend of the podcast, John Osberg is going to do the interviewing and his guest today is Pat Whalen, director of TReC a new business incubator in Niagara Falls, NY developed by the Niagara Global Tourism Institute. Pat has a long history of starting businesses and helping other folks start businesses, too and has awesome insights to share.

John Osberg: Hi, everyone. Welcome to another episode of the Smarter Business Podcast. I'm John Osberg, a local entrepreneurial business professional. Excited to have Patrick Whalen here of the Niagara Global Tourism Institute, who operates track also coworking space in Niagara Falls, New York. Patrick, welcome. Thanks for being here.
Pat Whalen: Thanks for having me.
John Osberg: All right. So, you know, we're here to talk a little bit about Patrick's background. Learn more about what he's doing in Niagara Falls, New York. Some of things he's done previously in Buffalo, New York, which have all been really exciting things. So, if cool, I'm going to jump right into it, Pat.
Pat Whalen: Sure. Let's go.
John Osberg: So on my list here, first thing I want to do is maybe an introduction personally and professionally on who you are and what you've done. A lot to talk about.
Pat Whalen: When you get old guys on here, it's gonna take a while and get.
John Osberg: A lot of awesome accomplishments though. Pat.
Pat Whalen: Yeah. So. Well, let's start with the present. We just had a soft opening. I call it a soft opening on November 4th of a coworking incubator in Niagara Falls, New York, as you mentioned, called TReC. The Niagara Global Tourism Institute operates it. We have Sherpas.
Pat Whalen: Talk a little bit about the story behind Sherpas. TReC is our name. It does have a meeting, those four letters. We don't tell anybody what it is though. So, we thought about a trek and a trek up Mount Everest. And the more I thought about that, the more we thought, well, this is an interesting thing. How do you get to the top of Mount Everest? So, I did some research and found that on average year twelve hundred people try. Six hundred make it. Six hundred don't. So, lore is that 50 percent of all new businesses fail. So, I thought, well, that's an interesting parallel. And the people that make it to the top of Mt. Everest, all of them have a Sherpa.

CJ Maurer: Well, first of all, thank you for having me here. I don't know how long it took me trying to poke you to get me on this podcast.

CJ Maurer: Well, I just love the idea of making content and doing podcasts like I want to be part of it. It's something I'm looking into myself as well. But no, seriously, thanks. This is cool. I love what you're doing. The Gist is an inbound marketing agency, simply put. So, a lot of people know inbound marketing is a process for generating leads and then nurturing those leads. And certainly, we help businesses do that. But really, my view of inbound is a process of enabling marketers and business owners to really look at the entire business lifecycle through marketing, sales, and customer service, identify opportunities to reduce friction, provide amazing customer experience and build loyal relationships that really help unlock sustainable growth. And if that sounds vague, I can kind of understand, but it's really about applying the same principles that you use to make it easier for people to engage with you at the top of the funnel through lead generation and follow up and things like that and applying that through sales and customer service as well. That's really what inbound marketing is as a mechanism to unlock growth.
Neil K Carroll: Excellent. So in terms of maybe products or services, if you were to go and tell somebody kind of this is what we do. You would say inbound services consulting or do you

Neil Carroll [00:00:49] Welcome to this episode of The Smarter Business Podcast. This month we have Alex Villafranca from Arbeit Software. And Alex, I'll give you an option to kind of introduce yourself and your company.
Alex Villafranca [00:01:05] Yeah. So Alex Villafranca, one of the co-founders and CEO of Arbeit Software. We are a communications platform that allows businesses to communicate with consumers in a modern, more friendly way. And essentially what that is, is we make, I mean, we have a few different products, but we have an autodialer is our first product that we launched about five or six years ago. That's what got us into this. It's not the most friendly way of communicating with consumers, but that was our first product. We have a phone system for businesses. We have a compliant communications platform that eliminates the need for robocalls for businesses, but allows them to still reach consumers in just as a productive and efficient way. So, yeah, that's what Arbeit is and what we do.
Neil Carroll: [00:01:56] That's excellent. And I think one of our first conversations we discussed your radio spots that you were doing. Right? For your phone system.
Alex Villafranca: [00:02:07] With Duke Nukem as our voice over.

Neil Carroll [00:00:52] Welcome to the first smarter business podcast. So the idea here is that we're gonna give some business tips with a bit of a video bent. Our inaugural guest for this podcast is Joe Neiman who is with ACV Auctions. What's your title now Joe.
Joe Neiman [00:01:09] Today it is Chief Customer Officer.
Neil Carroll [00:01:13] Excellent, and I'm going to ask you first Joe, just can you tell anybody who doesn't know what ACV Auctions is, who you guys are, what you do.
Joe Neiman [00:01:26] Absolutely. ACV Auctions is a Buffalo-based startup. So we got going about five years ago, and have built a pretty decent sized company here in Buffalo. We, our customers are car dealers, and we've created a marketplace where they buy and sell used cars between, between each other. So we are disruptive to the physical auctions. Most consumers don't have any idea that this industry exists but there's something like 20 million cars a year that get bought and sold between car dealers at auctions. So we're leveraging technology and a lot of people. So we're over 800 employees now all over the country, about 400 or so in Buffalo, but this is, this is how you want startups to pan out. We're, we're very lucky, very blessed. We've made a lot of mistakes but have fortunately recovered quickly. And yes we're d
