You’ve probably seen some scary statistics surfing around social media about missing children. Child trafficking statistics are being seen everywhere, and it’s eating into our worst fears as parents. ‘We need to talk about this more!’ ‘The media is hiding this from us’!. Let’s debunk some of the myths around child trafficking and sex abuse inflicted on minors, stranger danger, what trafficking really is (hot take: The mumfluencers crying ‘CHILD TRAFFICKING” aren’t cognisant that the cheap produce they/re flogging made in poor countries actually ties into child labour/trafficking itself). Let’s look at the history behind the laws of trafficking itself, why it’s tied deeply to immigration and race relations, and why mumfluencers sharing these stats, even though they appear to be helping, are actually advocating far-right pro-Trump sentiments (just because Epstein is a nasty child abuser, doesn’t mean all of Hollywood is #pizzagate). Ultimately, if you’re not for absolving systems effecting victims of DV, poverty, asylum seeking, immigration, minorities and POC, fair work trades across the board and forced marriage, then you’re not for truly wanting to #SaveTheChildren. Performative allyship, this time dipped in conspiracy propaganda, appealing to white mothers only - we meet again.
