  • DIALOGUES 36. The Future Of Work
The SNF DIALOGUES discussed the challenges—and opportunities—that lie ahead.
The last few decades have seen radical changes in the way we work and the way we perceive work—changes that have led to increased productivity and to economic growth, but not necessarily to increased quality of life for workers. Globalization, technological advancement, artificial intelligence, and generational shifts from Baby Boomers to Gen Z are powerful forces reshaping what work will look like into the future. The COVID-19 pandemic has led companies to change how they do business, and, at the same time, new questions and new dynamics are redefining labor relations.
On Thursday, October 29 at 18:30 (GMT +3), the SNF DIALOGUES discussed the challenges—and the opportunities—that lie ahead in “The Future of Work.” The digital workforce and artificial intelligence, remote work and the debate over universal basic income, old jobs that are evaporating and new jobs that are emerging, and the widening gap between high-skilled and low-skilled employment—and consequently between incomes—are some of the topics that were discussed in the DIALOGUES webcast.
Participants in the “The Future of Work” webcast:
-Christopher Pissarides, Regius Professor at the London School of Economics.
-Stamatina Yannakourou, Assistant Professor at the European University of Cyprus School of Law.
-George Zarkadakis, Digital Lead at Willis Towers Watson, Author.
Video interviews of Christiana Constantopoulou, Professor of Sociology at Panteion University and Sven Egil Omdal, journalist and author, were aired during the discussion.
The DIALOGUES are curated and moderated by Anna-Kynthia Bousdoukou.
*The opinions expressed by DIALOGUES participants are solely their own and do not necessarily represent the views of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) or iMEdD. Speakers’ remarks are made freely, without prior guidance or intervention from the team.

  • DIALOGUES 35. The Butterfly Effect Entangled Geopolitics
Just a few hours after Joe Biden and Donald Trump take the stage for the first debate in the U.S. presidential election, the SNF DIALOGUES will meet to discuss the new global geopolitical balances of a multipolar world. It’s a world in which a casual remark at a podium in Ohio can have real consequences for people in Greece, the position of a ship in the Mediterranean can influence the shape of European relations, and the business decisions of individual companies in China can propel U.S. political movements.
“The Butterfly Effect: Entangled Geopolitics", the next DIALOGUES webcast, will stream live at snfdialogues.org on September 30 at 9:00 a.m. (GMT+3). The wide-ranging discussion will cover the showdown for the American presidency, flaring tensions between Greece and Turkey in the Southeastern Mediterranean, and economic brinksmanship between the U.S. and China. In the midst of a pandemic that has left little oxygen for other stories, the speakers will refocus our attention on local developments that may soon have enormous consequences around our interconnected world.
Participants in the “The Butterfly Effect: Entangled Geopolitics” webcast:
    - Constantinos Filis, Executive Director of Institute of International Relations
    - Brady Kiesling, Author and former U.S. diplomat
    - Katerina Sokou, Washington DC Correspondent/ Nonresident Senior Fellow, Atlantic Council

  • 34. DIALOGUES In Summer
To help make sense of the extraordinary times we have been living through, starting in April 2020 the SNF DIALOGUES moved online for a series of live webcasts. These wide-ranging discussions have addressed social isolation, news and misinformation, the economy, the arts, and tourism. On Wednesday, August 26 at 20:00 (GMT+3), the SNF DIALOGUES will take stock of where we stand now, revisit past expectations, and contemplate the shape of things to come.
We will reconnect with a speaker from the DIALOGUES event held last August in Athens’ Mavili Square before “social distancing” was part of our vocabulary, check back in with speakers we’ve heard from during the COVID-19 era, and get a fresh perspective on the city’s cultural and public life from a new speaker. From a rooftop in Athens, the SNF DIALOGUES will bid farewell to a strange summer and discuss what the coming seasons might have in store.

  • DIALOGUES 33. The Interplay Between Technology And Democracy Pοtential And Limitations Audio
The SNF DIALOGUES and the SNF Agora Institute at Johns Hopkins University held on Wednesday, June 24 an online discussion about the potential benefits technology holds for democracy and any limits to its potential, during the Summer Nostos Festival.
George Zarkadakis, Digital Lead at Willis Towers Watson, Author said “We need more citizen assemblies where people come in, discuss with experts and have opinion and their opinion matters. It is important that their opinion matters. I think that this is one way of taking science communication and technology to the next level, which is citizens becoming true stakeholders”. Referring to the role of democracy, George Zarkadakis mentioned that “We need an enhanced liberal democracy that takes into account citizen participation in a much more significant way in order to regain trust”.
Alondra Nelson, President of the Social Science Research Council, Harold F. Linder Professor at the Institute for Advanced Study mentioned: “More than ever before it’s both important to have real experts at the table and those who are not experts but live with the consequences of the decisions that are being made by a technocratic society”, while regarding the role of democracy she stated that “The challenge for us in thinking about democracy is that the move to the universal is not always a move that provides equal liberties to all people”.
The discussion was moderated by journalist and SNF DIALOGUES Executive Director Anna-Kynthia Bousdoukou and SNF Agora Institute director Hahrie Han.
The DIALOGUES are curated and moderated by Anna-Kynthia Bousdoukou.

  • DIALOGUES 32. Tourism In Uncharted Waters
International tourism, which is widely recognized as Greece’s leading industry, has been severely interrupted on a global scale due to COVID-19. On Wednesday, June 10 at 18:30 (GMT+3) the SNF DIALOGUES explored the new conditions that prevail in tourism both locally and internationally. As tourism restarts, entrepreneurs and employees will be walking a tightrope between the economy and public health, attempting to manage unknown parameters in an unfamiliar landscape. Greece’s effective response in dealing with the crisis so far has been encouraging. Regardless, this year Greek tourism is inextricably tied with worldwide health, financial, and diplomatic considerations. At the same time, the international tourism sector is working to address the multi-layered challenges caused by ongoing developments.
Participants in the DIALOGUES webcast on “Tourism in Uncharted Waters”:
    - Alexandros Vasilikos, President of the Hellenic Chamber of Hotels
    - Georgia Zouni, Tourism Marketing Lecturer in the Tourism Studies Department at the University of Piraeus
    - Dimitrios Buhalis, Professor of Tourism and Technology Strategy at Bournemouth University
The DIALOGUES are curated and moderated by Anna-Kynthia Bousdoukou.
