In today's episode, I will be chatting with Glenn Towery an Artist, Writer, Filmmaker & Vietnam Combat Veteran. He will be sharing about his artwork, funk culture, and the movie he is making "Starfunk & The Astral Pioneers".
Glenn Towery Bio:
Glenn Towery is also the author of three children’s books starring the B.R.I.T.E. B.R.A.T.S. The books are “Good Words, Bad Words: Don’t Say That!”, “Never Again Will We Bathe” and “Jamal Has A Bully”. The B.R.I.T.E. B.R.A.T.S. are four multiracial children from diverse cultures who are BFFs. The B.R.I.T.E. B.R.A.T.S., share life’s adventures together and tackle social subjects from a kid’s point of view. These books are beautifully illustrated by his wife, Juanita.
As a theater person, Glenn Towery has had a long career. He was mentored by renowned stage manager and director, Edmund James Cambridge, and was friends with and worked with numerous talents including Margaret Avery, Marla Gibbs, Esther Rolle, Juanita Moore, Ted Lange, Robert Hooks, and several other well-known stars.
He was a finalist in the Inner City Cultural Center National Short Play Competition in 1988 with his entry, “SHADOW BOXER”. His new acapella musical play, “RETURN TO HOME BASE”, is scheduled for a reading by the University of Texas drama department as part of their possible involvement in the upcoming AVAFEST 2021 celebration. The play chronicles the life of an African American soldier and the racism he faces at home in America and abroad in the killing fields of Vietnam. Glenn also composed the music for “RETURN TO HOME BASE.”
Glenn is an award-winning filmmaker and screenplay writer. He is currently producing a motion picture from his award-winning screenplay, “Starfunk and the Astral Pioneers”. In 2017, this screenplay became an “Official Finalist” in both the CANNES and HOLLYWOOD Screenplay Contests in the SCI Fi category, which receive thousands of scripts a year in their contests for judging. in 2021 it won best screenplay SCI-Fi at the Festigious International Film Festival in Los Angeles in April of 2020. He has three other feature-length screenplays that he has written. “REST IN PIECE” (a haunting in the hood.), HITCHHIKE FOR LOVE (A Romantic Comedy), and “A TEXAS NEW YEARS EVE” a comedy that concerns itself with 3 Vietnam veterans and their raucous night in Texas.
Glenn Towery has won several awards as a director/producer/writer for the film projects :
“FOOLS GOLD”, “FREQUENCY” and “LONG LIVE THE SPIRIT” all of which he wrote and directed. As a veteran, Glenn served in the United States Navy. He is a member of the VFW, DAV, the American Legion, and AMVETS. Glenn is a Vietnam Combat veteran who served in the United States Navy.
In 2010, Glenn began painting clocks and he has not stopped since. To date, he has painted nearly 100 clocks. His clocks run the gamut from portraits to historical scenes to the avant-garde.
