Today is #nationalfairytaleday and we all love a great story. Especially when it comes to creating content we should always be thinking about the story we’re telling.

If your content doesn’t have a story too it, the value someone can get from it, why would they opt to consume it.

Your content wants to engage your audience, draw them in, take them on a journey and turn them into a raving fan so they subscribe for more.

So plan your content, and make sure you plan the story to go with each piece so you have a beginning middle and end to draw your audience through.

Today is hashtag#shrovetuesday and it got me thinking all about it’s other name Jif Lemon day.

This was an excellent example of great marketing especially as people of a certain age still call the day that.

It begs the question what could you tie your content back in to special days etc.

It’s why planning your marketing to specific days is so valuable and important to keep your brand on topic each week.

It’s #stickybunday which got me thinking about sitting down with friends for a brew and chatting about sales and it’s also possible on social media, but not instantly.

However, there’s a time and a place for selling. So many people use social media the wrong way and spend their time selling to people instantly.

You wouldn’t walk up to a potential partner in a bar and instantly ask them to jump in the sack, so why would you do this with social media.

How many of us for example have connected with someone on Linkedin and immediately got a sales DM through, it doesn’t sit well with us does it. So why when it cheeses us off if someone else does it do we put out sales messages constantly in our social media?

EXACTLY……..

Start thinking of social media for what it was created……to be SOCIAL, it’s not called selling media.

So remember, there’s a time and a place for selling on social media, and it’s when you’re putting money into it. Otherwise, use your time giving value, helping people in your niche out.

Today is #tugofwarday something if you’re in a businesses marketing department we feel we’re in every single day, especially when it comes to social media.

Don’t get me wrong, I talk about FREE and organic content all the time.

However, there comes a point that you have to also think seriously about your sales messages, and this is where actually speaking to a professional is good.

I was speaking to a business today about their content and they mentioned how they’d used Facebook ad’s but they hadn’t worked. As I pointed out, it’s not the ad’s that didn’t work they just didn’t do them right.

For example they had no idea they could go as narrow as literally advertise one item they sold to one type of person and then another add to another type of person.

Also, they had no idea they could pay for advertising on the likes of Spotify as a national business.

So next time your having that tug of war in work about if you should or shouldn’t be spending money, the answer is if it’s not worked in the past, it’s more likely you’ve messed up than the platform doesn’t work, so get it done right by someone who knows, or spend the next 50 or 60 hours learning the proper basics of a platform and watch that content reap the rewards.

Also, let’s have a chat about what you could do for your audience that’s also an act of kindness.

For me and for you on social media, so many people forget the most important concept behind social media, and that’s being SOCIAL. It’s what the platforms where invented for, they all originated from forums and sites like Friends ReUnited which are meant for talking to friends about things, catching up, or speaking to long lost friends.

So, when a social media channel is designed specifically for this type of thing, and businesses have just latched on to the idea, do you not think it’s best to use them for what they’re meant to be used for….being SOCIAL. Yes, it’s great to make money from potential new customers on social media, but the main thing is to help people, give your audience value and have those conversations with people.

So, next time you’re on social media, maybe it’s time for you to be sure you’re giving value-based content and perhaps reaching out to people who’re literally asking for help in your area of expertise on social media i.e. use the search function and find them. Get involved in the community.
