Countries throughout the Global South are joining millions on the ground in Cuba in mourning of the death of Fidel Castro. In contrast, anti-Castro Cubans in Miami, Florida's Little Havana danced in the streets, and U.S. President Elect Donald Trump called the deceased leader a brutal dictator. President Obama, meanwhile, expressed sympathy for the Cuban people and for Fidel's family.

Today, we spend the hour on Fidel, the Cuban Revolution and his government's impact on Africa, the Caribbean and the United States.

Margaret Prescod, host of "Sojourner Truth," is live on the ground in Port Au Prince, Haiti, where a preisdential election was held on Sunday, November 20. There was much anticipation and tension in the buildup to election day.

On Friday, November 18th, Prescod was with a crowd of approximately 20,000 people in Cite Soleil, the most impoverished place in the Western Hemisphere. Crowds gathered there to greet their favorite candidate, Dr. Maryse Narcisse of the Lavalas Party and her endorser, former President Jean Bertrand Aristide. It was an electrifying moment as a sea of Black people danced and chanted, and held up hope for change to their beleaguered lives.

But as election day wore on, it was becoming clear to those visiting polling sites – as well as to scores of voters who were turned away at the polls – that worries about an electoral coup was in fact possible. One Haitian told Prescod that on election day, either the system would work or it would be destroyed. By election night, there was a national electrical blackout, and a major marketplace run by impoverished women was burned to the ground. What is going on?

Our guests: Yvon Kernizan, a Haitian grassroots democracy campaigner who is on the ground in Haiti; Haiti expert, journalist and film maker Kevin Pina; Haitian educator and activist Frantz Jerome; and Selma James, womens rights campaigner and widow of CLR James, who wrote "Black Jacobins," the definitive book on the Haitian Revolution.

In response to the Trump election and the rise of racist attacks, how will the movement for change respond? Will movements come together across their divides? Will they merge lanes to build a massive response against bigotry, or will movement business continue as usual? One telling indication is that a womens march has been called for the day after Trumps inauguration with the main message that womens rights are human rights. But what about the rights of people of color? Why not a march against bigotry and for humanity and the planet?
