Our weekly roundtable breaks down the election that is being called a miracle by the far right and a nightmare by many progressives and marginalized communities. How do we find the inspiration and energy to keep hope in our hearts and the fire for justice burning within? How do we survive unspeakable horrors? This is it. After a long, nasty and grueling campaign, one we are told is unprecedented in US history, a divided country goes to the polls to elect the 45th President of the United States. Hillary Clinton brought out a slew of celebrity musicians in her final rallies, including Beyonce, Jay-Z, Stevie Wonder, Lady Gaga, Bon Jovi and Bruce Springsteen. Last night in New York City's Washington Square Park, Madonna weighed in by making an impromptu performance. In Philadelphia, First Lady Michele Obama and President Barack Obama joined Clinton for a final rally.

Meanwhile, Trump sprinted across the nation minus celeb performers (beyond Ted Nugget in Michigan) and also minus surrogates. Nevertheless, his rallies were attended by thousands and had the atmosphere of a rock concert.

Though national polls show Hillary with a four-percent point lead, nothing can be taken for granted. Turnout is key, and we encourage all who can to vote!

As in the Sojourner Truth tradition, we speak to people on the ground in several of the key states. Award-winning journalist Linn Washington will speak to us from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; labor union official Frank Meznarich is on the ground in Ohio; law professor Irving Joyner fills us in from North Carolina; and Austen McCoy, a postdoctoral fellow in Ann Arbor shares news from Michigan.

New polls show a neck-and-neck race for President of the United States as the world watches with concern. A new Reuters/Ipsos poll "States of the Nation" poll has the candidates tied in Florida and North Carolina, while Michigan is now too close to call. President Obama has been hitting the campaign trail hard. In early voting, the Black turnout is down from 2012, and the president is telling the nation that his legacy is at stake. The KKK newspaper has endorsed Trump, and so-named alt-right spokespeople are doing the job of making racism cool again.

How did we get to this place? What are the implications of the election results for the nation and the world, and for the on-going fight now underway between the FBI and the administration? Is a shadow government rearing its head? Are race and racism central to what we are seeing unfolding in this election?

All this rages on as indigenous people "who stand strong as water and land protectors at Standing Rock in North Dakota " are beat and pepper-sprayed by law enforcement, and the white militia who took over a federal facility while armed are set free. Meanwhile, a Black church was burned in Greenville, Miss. with the words "Vote Trump" scrawled on the wall of the church.

Today, we continue our coverage of the presidential race, get-out-the-vote efforts, the propositions in California (several of which have national implications), as well as the inter-relationship between art and protest movements. Trump increasingly has a path to the presidency; polls across the country have tightened since last Fridays FBI letter to the U.S. Senate regarding their Clinton email investigation. Also the letter was vague, Trump is running with it, again stating that Hillary has committed a crime. Meanwhile, it may all come down to the Black vote in North Carolina.

Our guests are Kokayi Kwa Jitahidi with the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor; Professor and North Carolina based attorney Irving L. Joyner; Susan Burton, founder of A New Way of Life Re-entry Project and a leading figure in the movement for criminal justice reform; Jackie Goldberg, who has served in the California State Assembly, LA City Council and as President of the LA City School Board; and Orin Langelle, photojournalist and Director of the Buen Vivir Gallery for Contemporary Art in Buffalo, New York. Langelle is also a co-founder of the Global Justice Ecology Project.

The 2016 election could hinge on North Carolina, a state facing with purged voter rolls, Black voter suppression and even flood damage from Hurricane Matthew. Our guest is North Carolina Central University School of Law professor Irving Joyner.
