In Thailand, the Khlong Sai Pattana – a community largely sustained by women farmers – will receive a court verdict on July 15, determining whether they will be evicted from their land, and lose their homes and livelihoods. The Southern Peasants Federation of Thailand is fighting against the possible eviction - and already, four members of the federation, two women and two men, have been murdered and one injured - in order to terrify the farmers into leaving. Our guest is “Bee” Pranom Somwong, who works with the Southern Peasants Federation of Thailand.

Today, we analyze this week's tragic fatal shootings of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile at the hands of police officers in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Falcon Heights, Minnesota, respectively; the deaths of five police officers at a peaceful demonstration in Dallas; and what these violent incidents mean for the future of movements for peace and non-violence, racial justice and police reform. Our guests are scholar and author Dr. Peniel Joseph; Ronald Hampton, former head of the National Black Police Association; artist and activist Marcel Williams; and mother of four Lajuana White.

On Wednesday, July 6, 2016, police shot and killed Philando Castile in the St. Paul, Minnesota suburb of Falcon Heights. A 32-year-old Black man, Mr. Castile, according to reports, was shot three to five times by police with his girlfriend in the car. He was stopped because of a busted tail light. His death at the hands of police comes just a day after the fatal police shooting of 37-year-old father of five Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

To commemorate the deaths of Alton Sterling, Philando Castile, and the 134 other Black people who have been killed by police in 2016 thus far, we revisit the stories of the countless people of color who were killed before them. At the 2015 Movement for Black Lives Convening, dozens of Black men and women whose relatives died at the hands of the police spoke, from Michael Brown’s father, to the mothers of Eric Garner and Tamir Rice, to the uncle of Oscar Grant, and many more. Family member after family member got up and spoke to attendees about their loved ones in one of the most emotional moments of the convening. Today, we’ll listen to those testimonies and more moving speeches from the event.

Today, we bring you sounds and stories from the People's Summit. Over 3,000 people gathered in Chicago in June 2016 to discuss the past and future in the movements for racial, social and economic justice. In this hour, we'll listen in on a performance at the Summit called "The People Speak." We'll hear dramatic readings of speeches, letters, poems, songs, petitions and manifestoes that tell the stories of people throughout U.S. history who struggled against slavery, racism, war, oppression and exploitation and articulated a vision for a better world. The performance was inspired by Howard Zinn's "A People's History of the United States," and featured a dozen actors: Allison Moorer, Hari Kondabolu, Max Carver, Rosario Dawson, Gaby Hoffman, Brian Jones, Wallace Shawn, Frances Fisher, Helen Hong, Eddie Kaye Thomas, Kendrick Sampson and Charlene Yee. This is Part 1 of "The People Speak."
