The Tibetan word for energy or exertion is Tsondru. It is about being completely present. It is not about generating some extra thing to accomplish something else.

The Sanskrit word for energy or exertion is virya. It is the fourth of the six paramitas of the Mahayana path and also shows up in different ways of teaching the Dharma. Quite often we’ll be practicing and then we’ll notice somebody else doesn’t practice quite the way we do. Everyone’s body mind complex is so incredibly different. Be very tentative about interrupting anybody else’s practice with your commentary, even as it comes up in your own mind. However that’s manifesting should be a way that you can understand more deeply your own practice just by watching the automatic judgement that sometimes comes up.

“Shikantaza” or “chicken tacos”, as it may show up with auto-correct, is Japanese work that means “just precisely this”. Try to keep everything as simple as possible so we can watch the complications of the mind, so we can see the way the paranoid mind, the lusting mind, the seductive mind, the creative mind the confused and frightened mind continues to scatter its energy in all directions. By looking precisely at it, eventually, we begin to see the way the mind actually functions.

In this particular path the looking within is done intentionally and with strong form in the sense that is very precise and direct if you follow it, understand to it and conform to it: sit down, hold still, and move your awareness deeper into what is happening to you personally.
