The Journal JAMA publishes a study finding where

intravenous Vitamin C is also thought to help against blood poisoning (Sepsis).

In the current study, the research team has now investigated "whether vitamin C is a more effective therapy against organ failure than the current standard of care for sepsis." In seven medical intensive care units in US hospitals, 167 patients with sepsis and acute respiratory distress were given either a placebo (dextrose 5% in water; 83 participants) or vitamin C therapy (intravenous vitamin C every six hours for 96 hours; 84 participants).

While no evidence was found in this study "that vitamin C improved sepsis-related organ failure, it did significantly reduce the length of time patients stayed in hospital", Dr Fowler reports. On average, after a period of four weeks, the vitamin C group spent three days less in the ICU (seven days compared to ten days). They also spent an average of one week less in hospital after two months (15 days compared to 22) than participants in the placebo group.

The study also found that mortality from sepsis was reduced to less than 30 per cent when the volunteers were injected with vitamin C. The comparison group had a lower mortality rate than the placebo group. The mortality rate in the comparison group, on the other hand, was 46 percent.

But what is true about this delusion?
