Memorial Day Edition 🇺🇸
Fashion - As with all Holidays, @IvyandCloth has you covered for Memorial Day! Their patriotic shirts all great to wear all summer long. We also like the idea of getting a new pair of sunglasses for the sunny season. It’s fun to have a pair that’s athletic and more casual and then another pair that’s more stylish and fashionable. Rhoda has had a couple pairs of @quayaustralia sunglasses over the years and they are still going strong. They have classic frames as well as some more trendy frames to choose from, plus they offer a virtual try-on! Bonus: they are polarized too. Summer time is a great opportunity to wear those easy, breathable cotton dresses and stay cool, but also look cute. @shop_avara has many options but one in particular is the neacie dress. Pair it with some slip on sandals or white sneakers and you’ve got an outfit!
Food - As of Memorial Day, barbecue season will be in full swing. One way to up level your hot dog game is to try @twrgrassfedbeef hot dogs. Not only are they delicious but they don’t have any mystery meat in them! You can find them for a steal at Costco. Another staple in our family is a salad our mom has made for years. It’s called the cashew, cream cheese ball salad with celery seed dressing. It’s very simple ingredients, but it’s not like any other salad you’ve had. The only thing is that you have to hand roll the cream cheese into small little peas size balls the night before. We are also a sucker for a good coleslaw recipe and it pairs well with the hotdogs. Rose has made one from Paleogrubs.com. And lastly, if you really want to wow your guests, whip up a patriotic themed charcuterie board!
Fitness - You may have hear of a famous workout that Crossfiters do over Memorial Day weekend called Murph, but do you know the significance of it? It’s to honor Lieutenant Michael Murphy who was killed in action in Afghanistan. It’s called a Hero wod in Crossfit. Murph consists of 1 mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 squats, 1 mile run and that’s with a 20lb vest on. A lot of people scale it down so they can actually participate, but the whole goal is to push through the pain and remember that others gave it all for our freedom.
Faith - Memorial Day is not just the kick off to summer or a time to barbecue. Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Unofficially, it marks the beginning of the summer season. Did you know that a law was passed that states everyone must take a minute of silence at 3pm on Memorial Day?
Fun Finds - To show your patriotism, you could hang some buntings on the outside of your house. (Found at most stores or Amazon). If you need healthy food ideas for summer time, Danielle Walker’s Celebrations book has you covered. If you are new to grilling or need ideas, check out Hey Grill Hey. And if you’d like to get away from the traditional grilling of hot dogs and hamburgers, then try fish tacos, asparagus, grill pizzas, or even peaches to pair with vanilla ice cream! We are always on the lookout for natural mosquito repellant so we are going to try @primallypure Nature Spray and we’ll report back. Anyone else deal with full glasses left at their house after a big party and you don’t know who’s drink it is and you’re left throwing it away? We need ideas! Maybe we’ll have to go back to the old sharpie method.
