This week’s topic is about fire safety in your home. An often overlooked item in one’s domicile is a fire extinguisher and the importance that it provides especially in the kitchen. According to NFPA.org US fire departments respond to an estimated average of 172,900 home structure fires by cooking activities.  These fires caused an average of 550 civilian deaths, 4,800 injuries, and more than $1 billion in direct property damage per year.  Regardless of where and how a fire starts, safety is important.  Just from a quick internet search, I found that prices for extinguishers ranged from $17 - $65 depending on certain factors. This week’s topic is about the residual value when leasing and should and buy the car when the contract is over.  When it comes to driving a car, the common question is, are you better off buying or leasing? On the whole, having two separate leases will cost more than purchasing a car outright. The other question is . . .  Should you buy a car when the contract is over or lease again? When looking at collision for auto insurance many people choose a lower deductible which is typical $500. The common thought is that I’ll pay out the least amount possible if I am at fault for an accident; however; as the rule goes: A Higher deductible = Lower car insurance rate and higher out-of-pocket costs Lower deductible = Higher car insurance rate and lower out-of-pocket costs So the question becomes why can choosing a higher deductible be beneficial? This week’s topic is about knowing store policies when returning expensive or custom made products with retailers.  For example, you can purchase exercise equipment or mattresses and they make it clear that you can return an item within 90-120 days; no questions asked. With that being said, not all companies work the same.  Just recently I purchased a piece of furniture that cost $2,000 which took over three months to have it made and delivered. As soon as the family sat on it we realized that it was not going to suit our needs.  So naturally we went to the retailer's website and the policy stated that they do not return items unless they are defective; however, I said why not call them anyway?  Upon talking to them they were very helpful; we explained the situation and they gave us a full refund.  Moreover, they said if we ordered from them again they’d waive that delivery fee as well.  One week later we purchased a new sofa. In fact, they also waived the delivery fee and gave us a store credit because we paid for the product in full.  The bottom line is that you should understand all policies before purchasing especially large ticket items.   In our case, we would have accepted their terms without question; we just gave it a shot and got lucky. Lastly, due to their great customer service, they will keep me as a long-term customer. This week’s topic is about managing your rainy day fund especially during the supply chain problem. The rainy day fund is money that is set aside in the budget to account for small, unforeseen expenses.  The amount that you need to put aside is arbitrary. It is based on what you own with items such as a home or a car and even a hobby.  The best way to determine this, is to look at the age or condition of the items that you own and estimate the cash that you may need.  For example, for a refrigerator or a television that is five years old, the odds have increased significantly that a repair is on the horizon.
