Join us for an inspiring conversation with retired Green Beret Lieutenant Colonel Scott Mann, who shares his compelling journey of leadership, resilience, and connection. He unveils insights from his book, "Nobody is Coming to Save You: A Green Beret's Guide to Getting Big Sh*t Done," and reflects on the pervasive issues of divisiveness and distractions in today's world.
Through powerful storytelling and personal anecdotes, Scott emphasizes the transformative power of unity and shared experiences, drawing from his own early life influences and initiatives, which are also evident in his award winning play, "Last Out: Elegy of a Green Beret".
Discover the profound concept of "rooftop leadership" as Scott explains his experiences in counterinsurgency, highlighting the need for long-term, community-based strategies that build trust and empower individuals. Through engaging stories and vivid metaphors, he illustrates how understanding local customs and fostering genuine relationships pave the way for sustainable change.
The concept of "the churn" is a central theme in the episode. Scott explains how modern society has created an environment where civil discourse has eroded, leading to increased distractions, disengagement, disconnection, and distrust—the four D's. This shift is compared to tectonic plates moving beneath us, resulting in behaviors reminiscent of primal in-groups and out-groups. Scott emphasizes the impact of technology and media on our attention spans and interpersonal relationships, urging listeners to recognize "the churn" as the true adversary. To combat this, he suggests focusing on gaining clarity by putting their own "oxygen masks" on first, allowing them to rise above the chaos and build cohesive communities.
Scott's journey from military life to addressing mental health issues among veterans underscores the healing power of storytelling and human connection. We touch on practical strategies for digital detoxes, enhancing creativity, and fostering authentic connections. Concluding with a focus on active listening and meaningful conversations, this episode invites you to explore the themes of leadership, resilience, and unity, and encourages you to engage with Scott Mann's inspiring work.

At the center of this story is "Black Beauty", a melanistic white-tailed deer, whose rare appearance on the Blitch family ranch came during a profound transformation in our approach and practices of wildgame and land management.
Melanism, a genetic trait causing an excess of melanin and resulting in dark coloration, is particularly prevalent in certain Texas counties, though this was the Blitch family's first interaction with a melanistic animal.
George recounts the shift from cattle ranching to wildlife stewardship, a decision that reshaped the family's ancestral lands. After inheriting the ranch, George and his wife, Meg, collaborated with local biologists to enhance habitats for native species like deer and turkey. This transition was not merely a change in operations but a deep-seated commitment to preserving the rich biodiversity that defines their region. Their efforts were driven by a desire to honor the land and its history, ensuring that future generations could experience its natural splendor.
The episode delves into the discovery and the exhilarating hunt for Black Beauty, blending instinct with uncertainty, culminating on Veterans Day—a poignant connection to George's grandfather's legacy on the family ranch. This encounter not only highlighted the importance of wildlife management but also underscored the family's commitment to sustainable land stewardship and family traditions.
Throughout the podcast, emphasis is placed on the importance of community involvement in conservation efforts. By working with local wildlife biologists and participating in programs like the NRCS's EQIP, we implemented strategies to improve habitat quality. This collaboration illustrates how landowners can partner with experts to achieve conservation goals, benefiting both wildlife and the environment. The Blitch family's story serves as an inspiring example of how individuals can make a meaningful impact on biodiversity through informed and responsible land management practices.
In conclusion, "Black Beauty" is more than a story about the hunt of an extremely rare deer; it is a heartfelt tribute to family heritage, the beauty of nature, and the enduring impact of conservation. George Blitch invites listeners to reflect on their own relationship with the natural world, encouraging a deeper appreciation for the wonders that surround us. Whether you are a seasoned hunter or a wildlife enthusiast, this episode offers valuable insights into the significance of preserving our natural heritage and the joys of stewarding the land for generations to come.

Seven years ago, I stood at a crossroads – one path leading further into the dark familiarity of alcohol, and the other towards a life of clarity, sobriety and purpose.
This episode marks not just a personal milestone of sobriety, but a testament to the transformative power of change, and the message that You are not alone in your struggles.
Join me as I reflect on the journey from those early struggles to the rewarding clarity that sobriety has brought to my life. From shedding 45 pounds to gaining better control over my emotions, the changes are profound and lasting. I am a more present (and better) father, husband, and friend.
Through sharing my story, I aim to kindle hope for those struggling with their own addictions, affirming that a new life is achievable, one day at a time.
I produced two other podcasts about my sobriety at my 5 and 6 year marks, and both times, I've had people reach out to me to talk about their desire to leave their addictions behind. So, I felt it was a good and useful idea to continue that trend and to offer encouragement and some resources for this looking to take that next step of sobriety in their own lives...

About "Capture or Kill"
Mitch Rapp faces an Iranian foe bent on destabilizing the Middle East in the newest thriller from Vince Flynn’s #1 New York Times bestselling series, now written by the “worthy successor to Tom Clancy” (Publishers Weekly) Don Bentley.
April 2011: On a remote mountaintop overlooking the remains of the Iranian nuclear weapons program, Azad Ashani witnesses a Quds Force demonstration of a capability meant to upend America’s war in the Middle East. Ashani, director of the Iranian Ministry of Intelligence and Security and Irene Kennedy’s former back channel to the Iranian government, recognizes the demonstration’s true significance, and the nation-ending conflict it will provoke. Alone, Ashani stands no chance of preventing this rush to madness.
But with the help of one man, he just might.
In Washington, DC, CIA director Irene Kennedy briefs the president that the operational window to kill or capture Osama bin Laden at his recently discovered compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan is rapidly closing. But before he’ll authorize a commando raid on Pakistani soil, the president demands irrefutable proof of bin Laden’s presence.
Proof he trusts just one man to provide.
Preventing a looming war in the Middle East while delivering justice for the nearly 3,000 Americans killed on 9/11 would be a big ask for anyone.
Mitch Rapp isn’t just anyone.
