A great brand, social media presence, website, videos, and marketing strategy cannot compensate for songs that aren't strong enough. NCS's approach begins with developing highly crafted songs that can stand out in an increasingly crowded marketplace.

The goal is to help Christian artists move beyond simply writing from intuition or inspiration and learn the craft of creating songs that connect with listeners.

You Need a Team and a Path:

One of the central ideas of the episode is that artists need more than passion. They need a path.

Without a team or process, an artist can quickly become overwhelmed trying to manage songwriting, recording, branding, social media, content creation, websites, videos, touring, and business responsibilities all at once.

John describes NCS's artist development programs as being similar to a "record label in a box"—providing artists with coaching, development, production, branding, content, and other resources depending on their needs.

Howard Gripp: From Nine-to-Five to Developing as an Artist:

Howard Gripp came to NCS wanting to improve his songwriting. At the time, he was in his early 60s, working an IT job in Wisconsin and pursuing music while maintaining a regular career.

He first went through John's songwriting program and then became one of NCS's early artist development clients. As his songwriting developed, the team began working on his first collection of songs, his sound, branding, and overall artist identity.

Bryant eventually stepped in as producer, helping Howard combine his rock-and-roll influences with elements of modern Christian music. The experience illustrates that it's never too late to take your songwriting and artistic calling seriously.

Mike and Nick Ryan: A Family Story Becomes an Artist Journey:

John and Bryant also share the story of Mike and his son Nick Ryan. Mike encountered Christianity through his son's faith journey and began experiencing song ideas after surrendering his life to Christ.

Recognizing that the musical ideas he was receiving needed development, Mike and Nick eventually connected with NCS and attended a songwriting retreat.

The team discovered that Nick had a remarkable vocal ability, even though he had never recorded in a professional studio before. That discovery led to multiple songs, performance coaching, branding, social media development, and an emerging artist platform.
