  • Path to Happiness : Relationships

Path to happiness series final episode is on relationships. In this episode, we will go over relationships and the main cause how it can impact our happiness levels. For sustained happiness we need to slowly develop awareness, self-awareness and understanding of our own self. To attain that, the best feedback loop is our relationships. Our relationships gives us metrics, the variables that trigger us and how we respond with emotion.

Every interaction triggers an emotion in us. The emotion is dependent on our memory, our bias, our physical exertion levels. The interaction for me has always made me feel happier about it or not happy about it. And that emotion, becomes the driver for the judgement we make. Every-time the thoughts do NOT match our though that is seen as a threat in our mind and we feel challenged.

While the above drives judgement which directly impact our happiness, the second main driver in relationships is the expectations. Interview of Ratan Tata https://youtube.com/shorts/40xpZ8Z4b40?feature=share where he mentions he does not have to react to other peoples concerns. His entire mind is free to focus on "work" and not worry about these dependencies for happiness.

The question is, why should I expect someone else to make me feel happier? who put those thoughts in my mind to expect them from others? does it provide a sustained levels of happiness?

  • Path to Happiness : Facts
Happiness and facts. I have realized that facts are another way to come back to present and it allows us to "let go" of whatever we are feeling. All the spirituality that talks about letting go, surrendering is put in very simple terms for my listeners to apply with real life examples. Once we get a habit of sticking with the facts, the chances of feeling "unhappy" about anything or getting mind-fucked is very less. We become more friendly with the present and surrender to it. This does not mean that we do NOT take any actions. This only means that actions happen naturally which has more intensity and less stress if we were to push it to make it happen. The outcome is life flows like water.

  • Republish - Minimalism in

    Minimalism Applied to Psychology

Minimalism as applied to psychology represents a fascinating integration of an aesthetic and lifestyle philosophy with mental health principles. This approach extends beyond decluttered physical spaces to address the psychological dimensions of simplification and intentionality.

At its foundation, psychological minimalism focuses on:

    1. Cognitive decluttering: Reducing mental noise, overthinking, and rumination by simplifying thought processes and focusing attention on essentials.
    2. Values clarification: Identifying core personal values and aligning decisions around them, effectively filtering out activities and commitments that don't contribute to meaningful living.
    3. Attention economy management: Deliberately allocating mental resources toward significant relationships and experiences rather than dispersing attention across numerous shallow interactions.
    4. Reducing decision fatigue: Streamlining choices to preserve cognitive bandwidth for important matters, often through establishing routines and limiting unnecessary options.

Research suggests minimalist approaches may offer several mental health advantages:

    • Reduced anxiety: Less visual and mental clutter correlates with reduced stress responses and anxiety levels.
    • Improved focus: Minimizing distractions enhances concentration and cognitive performance.
    • Greater contentment: Shifting focus from acquisition to appreciation fosters increased satisfaction with existing circumstances.
    • Enhanced self-efficacy: Creating intentionally designed environments and routines increases feelings of control and capability.

Mental health professionals have adapted minimalist principles into various interventions:

    • Minimalist cognitive behavioral therapy: Streamlining traditional CBT to focus on core thought patterns rather than extensive exploration of historical factors.
    • Essentialism-based mindfulness: Practices that emphasize awareness of what's genuinely important rather than comprehensive attention to all stimuli.
    • Digital minimalism protocols: Structured approaches to reduce technology dependence and information overload.

Critics note potential issues when applying minimalist philosophy to psychology:

    • The risk of avoidance when simplifying becomes a mechanism for escaping necessary emotional complexity
    • Cultural insensitivity when minimalism is prescribed without recognizing diverse values around possessions and abundance
    • Accessibility concerns when minimalist ideals require privilege or resources to implement

The most effective psychological applications of minimalism recognize that the goal isn't emptiness but intentionally filled space—both physically and mentally—that aligns with individual values and supports psychological wellbeing.
