I got a great guy today that I'm excited to have and host, Andrew Opdyke, he is from First Trust Portfolios, and he an economist there. Welcome buddy, how are you?

Andrew Opdyle:

I'm good Trevor, I'm happy to be with you today. How are you?

Trevor:

I'm really good. So we use some of your products, and I must say, I want to give a shout out to First Trust, you're really a first class organization, and I'm sure it must be challenging, but a fun organization to work for. And all the events you've ever been in have been so professionally run with you guys, and I just wanted to shout out to that.

So my man, interesting times to be an economist, huh?

Andrew Opdyle:

Oh my gosh, I never thought, yeah, when I went through school in undergrad, grad school, all that, I never thought I'd spend this much time looking into things like epidemiology, and looking into how the constitution is written in specific areas related to election timing and things like that. So an unusual year for sure.

It looks like we've got a lawyer in the house. Paul Foley is a leading corporate and securities lawyer. He's the chair of Akerman's Investment Management Practice Group. Did I say that right?

Paul Foley:

Trevor Chambers:

I did that on purpose. I was testing you. In the asset, I had a great... I hit it off with Paul immediately. Paul and I met... Paul, this was three, maybe going on four years ago, if you believe that. My senior partner, Alex and I were doing due diligence on the independent RA channel because we wanted to make a move to that channel. And somebody connected us to you. We went down to see you and had a ball. And your comment was... Do you recall what your comment was to us in your office?

Paul Foley:

I think I remember, but I'll let you share it.

Trevor Chambers:

Okay, thank you. What you said was, "I've met a lot of guys, not quite as bright as you, who have done it. You could do is fine." Which I thought was hilarious. I don't know if you wanted to endorse that or not.

Paul Foley:

I just think sometimes there's a lot of anxiety about moving independent and moving away from potentially [inaudible 00:01:46] brand name and that kind of thing. The rules and the way it all works is pretty reasonable. I think it's not as daunting of a task to go independent as some are led to believe. And that was really what I was trying to communicate there.

Thank you so much for your service, sir. How long? Were you in the Guard? Looks like quite a while. Thank you. Talk about that a little bit.

Kevin Lewis:

Six years. Yeah, six years. I graduated from Virginia Tech. I went through the ROTC program there, the Corps of Cadets, and had the honor of serving for six years as a combat engineer officer for the Virginia Army National Guard and the Reserve. It was a rewarding experience, and one I was glad to do.

Trevor Chambers:

Great. Thank you for your service. We always love hearing from you folks, veterans. All right, my man. Let's just jump right into this. I want to talk about, you guys have a nice growth portfolio that you run. I think you call it the Focused Dynamic, and I want to jump right into it, because we're obviously in an interesting time in the markets. I want to see, let's talk about your philosophy and what sets that strategy part and what you guys have got going on with it. Then let's talk from that, I guess we talked about this a little earlier and you said, "I don't want to talk thematically." You don't invest thematically is what you said, so talk to me about that. What's going on? Talk to me about American Century. Talk to me about the strategy.

No problem. We know each other quite a bit. About jeeze, coming up on three years, and I know that you work with your dad Tom, who co-founded ASN, and I just wanted to talk to you today, because I want to get your perspective. You do business development, so you bring people on board to ASN and the platforms you developed. I just wanted to hear, what does ASN do for advisors. What's your pitch, and then we can just talk about other things, but I want to start there. Why work with ASN, and why move to that type of regulatory platform?

Trey Prescott:

Loaded question.

Trevor Chambers:

Yes, of course.

Trey Prescott:

It really depends on who you are, what you're doing, but more importantly, where you want to go in this business. We come from a very different space. I begrudgingly joined ASN straight out of college and-

Begrudgingly?

Trey Prescott:

Just listen. If you grew up in a house with Tom Prescott… compliance consultant, you would understand begrudgingly.

Everybody. I don't know if anyone's listening, but anyway. James is an associate professor and a Nancy Allen Fellow of Management at Mississippi State University. He focuses on family business and entrepreneurialism, among other things, but I hear the Vardaman train is moving out and you're going someplace. Where you going now?

James Vardaman:

Yeah. I'm moving to the University of Memphis in the fall. I'll be a professor of management and chair of Excellence and Free Enterprise. So I'll be doing more work on entrepreneurship. I'll just be doing it a few hours north.

Trevor Chambers:

Well, fabulous. You'll be having Memphis barbecue.

James Vardaman:

I will, I will.

Trevor Chambers:

Nice. Well, it's so great to have you and I appreciate you taking some time. What's your history, and how did you arrive now at the University of Memphis and this interest that you have in entrepreneurs?

I've got a really interesting gentleman with us. Joachim Klement is somebody I started following. He's got a great newsletter out, and we'll include all the contact information on Joachim when we get done.

His observations on markets, finance culture and politics are rooted in what I would called a unique vantage point. Joachim is German born and raised but lives in London with his American wife. I want to hear that story. He's an investment strategist with a long career in asset allocation economics, equities, and alternative investment. And he looks at the lens. He looks at life and everything, but particularly in markets, through the lens… He's a trained physicist, but he loves the human side of financial markets.

I'm very good. How are you guys?

Good, I'm great. I'm sorry for the long-winded introduction, but you got a lot going on there. How's things in London? Are we foggy, overcast or what's going on over there?

No, for once, we've had two terrible weeks of rain and gray, which is obviously, a typical British summer, but now we actually have sunshine which is quite a nice change.

Trevor Chambers:

That's fabulous. Well, I'm glad to hear that, and I do want to hear about how you got this Yankee wife. We'll get to that in a minute. I want to jump right into it, all right? What's the stupidest argument in the world of economics, in your opinion, currently?

Good. We're excited to have Tom because Tom is a veteran of the financial services world and he's got a wonderful company called ASN that I want you guys to hear about. But real brief, Tom Prescott is the founder and managing member of Advisory Services Network. He's got 35 years of experience. I see, in my deep research on your background, you've got Lehman and a couple of other big names in there. So you've been around, give me the two minute on Tom Prescott, please.

Thomas C Prescott:

Well, came into the industry straight out of college, got a training program spot with Lehman brothers, [CUNLOB 00:01:00] before it was the Lehman Brothers that we all read about in the news. It was a great, great experience and yeah, they did the old type of training program. They trained you in every segment of the business and then you decided, or they decided where you fit best. Been in the industry ever since. For the last 30, I've been obviously managing my own businesses since I left, what I would call the normal wall street experience.

Trevor Chambers:

Nice. So let's get right into it. Tell us about ASN and why, more importantly, did you start this beautiful business of yours?

Hey, Trevor. Good to be with you.

Trevor:

It's such a pleasure to have you. So what's going on in Jackson... well, let me actually, before I do this, I'm fumbling this whole introduction. So one of your areas of research, the reason why I got Will on today is because he focuses on family business, some of his research, family business and specifically succession planning, so I'm really excited to have him talk about that. Obviously, we here at Olde Raleigh Financial, we're in the financial planning business, so this dovetails really, really well.

But, before I get into all of that, you're in lovely Jacksonville, Mississippi this morning, the 29th of May, 2020. What's going on down there, how's things?

Will:

Things are okay. You know, it's quarantine life, so nothing too exciting. We're doing all right. I got two kids and they're enjoying being at home. Their mom is maybe, getting a little bit stressed, but you know, I think that's pretty common across the board.

Trevor:

So just for historical reference, for the futures of millions that are going to listen to this podcast, we're in the middle of the plague of what we call COVID-19, so that's what's going on. Well, I'm glad to hear that everybody is at least doing well. Yes, there's a lot of frustrated parents across the United States of America. You're a professor, obviously are going to look pretty different in the fall I would imagine, or could potentially look pretty different in the Fall for you guys, I imagine.

Will:

Oh yeah for sure. Right now, it's anybody's guess, what's going forward. We're in the south east and our state is opening back up at this point, so our university is planning to be open back up, but who knows what the future holds, we'll just have to see.

It's May 21st, 2020. Today, I'm super excited. We're going to kick off. It's the opening volley. It's the shot heard round the world. It's the first edition of Inside the Arena with Chris Arena. Let me say that again. It's Inside the Arena with Chris Arena, a Durham, North Carolina based CPA who loves working with warriors, otherwise known as entrepreneurs. Is that a correct characterization of one Chris Arena?

Chris:

I think that sounds good. I love working with entrepreneurs and warriors, wherever that Venn diagram overlaps, which you decide.

Trevor:

Yeah, man. How you doing today? I should note that it is overcast and has been overcast for several days. How you doing, man? How's your vitamin D levels out there?

Chris:

Yeah, struggling. It's been raining nonstop it feels like, what, a week.

Trevor:

Yeah.

Chris:

The quarantine, I've got two young kids ... They're three and five, so I'm exhausted every day no matter what. Then you add in the fact that I've been shut in with them for going on four days now, mentally I’m… We'll just put it that way.

Trevor:

Yeah. You got the easy job because you're not the mom. Come on. Let's just call a spade a spade. Right?

Chris:

Excuse me. I'm a 21st century dad. Very active and involved. My wife is a 21st century mom. She works full-time just like I do. We're both completely up to our neck and childcare and losing our minds. Jointly.

Trevor:

All right. All right. I'm just saying, she's still the boss.

Chris:

She's definitely still the boss, does way more than I do. I'm just trying to pretend that's not the case, but yeah. Absolutely.

Hey everybody. It's Trevor Chambers from Old Raleigh Financial Group here in lovely Raleigh, North Carolina. Today on Meet the Masters ... Matthew, I've got to call you a smarty-pants. I read your bio and stuff. I did deep research as far as Google. This guy is cool. Matthew Klein is an economics commentator for Barron's Magazine. His latest book is, Trade and Balances and How Global and Trade and Financial Systems Can Transmit Problems from One Society to Another. Did I get that right? Did I botch it? How did I do?

Matthew Klein:

Yeah, that's fantastic.

Trevor Chambers:

Fabulous, man. Now where you are, my friend? Tell us where you are?

Matthew Klein:

I'm in San Francisco right now, sunny San Francisco.

Trevor Chambers:

How are things? I've got to mark the date. Today is May 20th, 2020. What's the stage of the state there briefly?

Matthew Klein:

San Francisco is interesting because we had one of the first cases of coronavirus in the United States along with Seattle and we reacted very quickly to that. It seems like that worked pretty well. We've always had relatively few infections. I think the total death count in San Francisco itself is under 40 which obviously is a lot worse than zero but compared to a lot of other large cities, this is relatively good. Things seem to be, in many ways, I don't want to say fully normal, but you see people out in the streets here. People go into stores that are open. Restaurants seem to be doing relatively brisk business in take out and delivery. I see plenty out when I go out on runs. Compared to some other places, I think we've been very fortunate.
