I’m Trevor Ontiveros Florida hit an alarming one-day high on Sunday with 15,300 new coronavirus cases, shattering both the state and national record for new cases reported since the start of the pandemic. With Sunday’s staggering surge in new cases, Florida eclipsed New York’s coronavirus peak of 12,274 cases on April 4.

It’s Friday, July 10th and here are today’s top headlines from the newsroom of the South Florida Sun Sentinel. I’m Trevor Ontiveros. Florida on Thursday crossed the 4,000-death threshold for the pandemic and logged the most deaths in a 24-hour period: 120. One of Florida’s first big spikes in cases happened two weeks ago on June 26, when the state reported 8,942 new cases — a record high at the time. On the same date there were 213 new hospitalizations.

It’s Thursday, July 9th and here are today’s top headlines from the newsroom of the South Florida Sun Sentinel. I’m Trevor Ontiveros. The kitchen is still open in Broward County. Rather than close restaurants to cope with surging cases of COVID-19, the county decided Wednesday to just tighten restrictions. Restaurants will be required to limit tables to six people for indoor dining, which must close by 10 p.m., under an order Wednesday from County Administrator Bertha Henry.

The chances of getting a positive test for COVID-19 are becoming higher now than at anytime since the pandemic began, a sign that the virus is spreading at a quicker pace. The positive test rate on Tuesday reached 20.8% statewide, the highest yet for a single day.

South Florida is crawling back into coronavirus lockdown as the virus spreads, with Miami-Dade County shutting down restaurants and gyms beginning Wednesday. And Broward County may not be far behind. Broward officials met Monday to discuss what businesses could be rolled back and how, Mayor Dale Holness said. A decision could come by Wednesday.

Florida’s coronavirus cases continue to soar, with the state reporting another 10,059 cases on Sunday. The Florida Department of Health says 200,111 people have tested positive for the coronavirus since the pandemic began. The state reported 29 new deaths Sunday morning. At least 3,832 people have died from the virus in Florida, reports show.

Florida is now deeper into its coronavirus crisis than ever before, as the state added 10,109 new cases on Thursday, the state’s one-day record for the pandemic. The state Department of Health also reported 68 additional deaths linked to COVID-19, for a new total of 3,718 fatalities.

Florida health officials report the state logged 6,563 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday, the fourth-largest such figure during the pandemic, with all of the top four coming in the past week. The record is 9,585 cases on Saturday, followed by 8,942 on Friday, and 8,530 on Sunday.
