Two people have been arrested in the killing of a Coral Springs firefighter. Sheriff Greg Tony made this announcement to about 800 mourners yesterday, at Christoper Randazzo’s memorial service, which was held at a Coral Springs hotel for the service. Tony also told mourners that “we have a confession" in the case.

It’s Thursday, October 24th and here are today’s top headlines from the newsroom of the South Florida Sun Sentinel. I’m Trevor Ontiveros. The Florida Senate voted yesterday to permanently remove suspended Broward Sheriff Scott Israel. The 25-15 vote was mostly along party lines with Republicans, who are a majority in the Senate and are loyal to the Republican governor. They generally supported the removal while most Democrats voted to reinstate the Democratic sheriff.

February 14th, the anniversary of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School massacre, will become a half-day for all Broward students starting in 2020, and will remain a dedicated day of memorial in Broward schools in perpetuity. The School Board hasn’t yet worked out all the details, such as what happens in 2021, when Feb. 14 is a Sunday.

A popped balloon, not gunshots, sparked widespread panic and a 6-hour lockdown at the Town Center mall in Boca Raton on Sunday. A janitor’s garbage cart ran over the balloon near the food court, and shoppers fled. Officers in tactical gear swarmed the mall after reports of shots fired while shoppers hid.

The day after an active shooter scare at Boca Raton's Town Center mall, shoppers were back yesterday and so were the police. Parts of the mall opened as regularly scheduled, while others opened later yesterday.
