Introduction

Every life must be treated with dignity because of God’s design.

1. Every Life is Sacred. (vv. 13–15)

      We are created in the image of God. (v. 13)

      We are created uniquely by God. (v. 14)

Jeremiah1:5 Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.

1. Every Life Starts at Conception. (vv. 15–16)

1. Stand with Conviction and Compassion.

      Pray for justice

Micah 6:8 He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord

require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly

with your God?

      Participate and engage this issue

Attack of the Heart: Anger

Introduction

Proverbs 4:23 Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.

Proverbs 25:28 A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls.

When anger RULES in your heart, it will RUIN your life.

1. Rooted in the heart (vv. 21–22)

Luke 6:45 The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

      Rooted in unbelief

      Rooted in shame

         a.  Secret sin

         b.  Selfish expectations

1. Ruins the best parts of your life (v. 22)

Quote: “Anger, held on to, is not only sin, it is spiritually dangerous.”

Hebrews 12:14-15 Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord. See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God; that no “root of bitterness” springs up and causes trouble, and by it many become defiled. . . .

      Gives the enemy a foothold

      Destroys you and others around you

A heart RULED by anger will RUIN the best things in your life.

Matthew 7:1-5

Introduction:

Proverbs 4:23 Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.

Criticism blinds you to your own faults and possible judgment.

1. A critical heart leads to severe personal judgment. (vv. 1–2)

Galatians 6:7 Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap.

Quote: “An unforgiving Christian is an oxymoron.”

1 Peter 4:8 Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins.

Ephesians 4:32 Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

Romans 12:18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.

1. A critical heart minimizes my own short comings and maximizes others’. (vv. 3–4)

1. A critical heart will not look inside their own heart/life. (v. 5)

Galatians 1:6-10

Introduction

Seek God’s approval, not the approval of others.

Proverbs 29:25 The fear of man lays a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is safe.

1. Stop CHASING man’s approval.

      Compromise what you believe (vv. 6–9)

      Compromise who you are (v. 10)

1. Strengthen CONVICTION of God’s opinion.

God must be BIGGER to you than people are.

1. Simply COMMIT to your calling.

We are a slave to ONE and a servant to ALL.

Stop using people for their approval, and you’ll be free to serve them.

Guilt and Forgiveness

Introduction:

John 8:31-32 So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Confession of your sin will lead you to a grace that will overcome guilt.

1. Confession is possible.

“Sin is much, much more than the violation of a set of rules. Sin is more profound than rebellion against a moral code. Sin is about something deeper than behaving inappropriately. It’s deeper than bad actions and wrong words” — Paul Tripp, White as Snow

“Sin is cosmic treason. Sin is treason against a perfectly pure Sovereign. It is an act of supreme ingratitude toward the One to whom we owe everything, to the One who has given us life itself.” — R.C. Sproul

1. Commitment is promised.

Psalm 103:12-13 as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us. As a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him.

1. Cleansing is provided.

I John 2:1-2 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.

Guilt and Moralism

Introduction

Living from good works and not grace will cause a life filled with GUILT.

1. Performing is foolishness (v. 1)

Romans 4:9 Is this blessing then only for the circumcised, or also for the uncircumcised? For we say that faith was counted to Abraham as righteousness.

1. Power in faith (v. 2–3)

2 Corinthians 5:21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

1. Perseverance in failure (vv. 4–9)

Colossians 2:6 Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him,

It is much easier for us to DO than to BE.

• Be constantly reminded of where He found

• Keep getting up.

• Read your Bible.

• Gospel-centered community is a must.

Raise Them Up: Forgiveness

A heart of forgiveness frees you from past pain and a lifetime of bitterness.

Proverbs 19:11 Good sense makes one slow to anger, and it is his glory to overlook an offense.

Colossians 3:13 bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.

1. We are called to forgive because of the BURDEN of bitterness.

Bitterness described

Bitterness is settled anger, a settled stance or posture against the perpetrator.

Bitterness destroys 

• imprisons you to your past

• produces more bitterness

• provides Satan an open door

2 Corinthians 2:10-11 Anyone whom you forgive, I also forgive. Indeed, what I have forgiven, if I have forgiven anything, has been for your sake in the presence of Christ, so that we would not be outwitted by Satan; for we are not ignorant of his designs.

• hinders your fellowship with God

Matthew 6:14-15 For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

1. When you choose to forgive it becomes a BLESSING.

Introduction

Our passions and pursuits will mold our children for generations to come.

We are warned that idols lead to imitation and imitation leads to iniquity.

1. COMMIT to pursuing God. (vv.7–8)

An idol is anything that has to be a part of your future in order for your

life to be worth living.

James 4:2 You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask.

1. CLEAN out your idols. (v. 9)

Romans 5:8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

We will fail our kids if we beat them down instead of build them up.

Instead of DEMANDING obedience, we can DISCIPLE them to obey God.

Godly discipline is a fight for the hearts of the next generation.

Maturity in Christ, not modification of behavior, is the goal of discipline.
