Today you can enjoy golf, hiking, birding, horseback riding, botanical gardens, archery, disk golf, and more.What many don't know, however, is that in the 1930's the Civilian Conservation Corps went to work within Tyrell Park on projects to construct new buildings and improve the landscape within the park. March 19, 20249 | Spindletop Boomtown - Birth of the Petrochemical IndustryOn January 10th, 1901, an event occurred in Beaumont that shook the ground, and shook the world. A stream of oil shot up through the earth, and wasn't capped for 9 days. At the time, it was the largest oil producing well in the world and it shocked all of those who felt the Gulf Coast held no oil reserves. It was only through the persistent efforts of a handful of men and the support of their wives that the "black gold" was finally tapped at a depth of a little over 1,000 feet. March 02, 20246 | Civil Air Patrol - Civilians Patrolling for Enemy Subs During WWIIIt's WWII, and enemy subs are in the Gulf of Mexico looking to sink vessels carrying valuable Texas oil that was being used to fuel the Allied Forces. Out of necessity to protect these vessels, the Civilian Air Patrol was created. Volunteers, using their own planes and funds, would suit up and fly out of Beaumont Municipal Airport and over the Gulf, acting as eyes for our military and keeping the submarines in check. Equipment was scarce, and the missions were dangerous. It's a truly American story.In this episode, we talk with Mrs. Penny Clark, Special Collections Librarian at Lamar University and author of "Beaumont's Civil Air Patrol in WWII." He flew back in the next morning and that afternoon he met me at the Museum of the Gulf Coast to sit down for this interview.David was born in Port Arthur and has played for stars including Loretta Lynn, Ty England, Johnny Paycheck, Sammy Kershaw, Jo-El Sonnier, George Jones, and Neil McCoy. Varnado received the 2017 American Fiddler Association's Legend Award, the 2018 Johnny Gimble Fiddler of the Year Award, and has been named Fiddler of the Year six times by Texas Country Music Association.As you will hear in this interview, though, his musical accomplishments are eclipsed by his humility, grace, and constant work ethic.
