  • Invasion of Hull Cove - Joan Hall
video, photos and music (c) Matteo Losurdo & Matthieu Samadet - 2019

    Joan Hall (United States)

    Invasion of Hull Cove, 2019

at Palazzo Mora (European Culture Center) in Venice.

"I have always been drawn to the sea.

Climate change demands new and different ways of navigation how we exist. Plastic is here to stay, but as a civilization we need to consume responsably. Ocean currents cause plastic detritus to circle the planet as it breaks down, creating large gyres of swirling particles that are causing devastating results to marine life.

Being an artist and an avid sailor, I am drawn to the tension between control and surrender, and I embrace the unpredictability of the materials and processes I use in making my art. Exploration and experimentation are core to my process.

Invasion of Hull Cove is influenced by an experience of walking on a Rhode island beach after a storm and seeing pink, fleshy colored vegetation over a foot deep piled on the shore. It was beautiful, but my gut reaction was that it did no belong. I learned that it was a type of invasive algae that come from Asia and can now survive in a New England climate. I immediately took photographs that were used to create the wallpaper.

I want viewers to be attracted to the beauty of my piece, but on closer inspection, realize it is camouflaging danger. Beauty is my tool to seduce the viewer into contemplating a troubling message.

My work combines my need to make art that is visually arresting with my passion for marine advocacy. I want to initiate a conversation about the peril we will face if we choose to ignore climate change.

My installations and artworks polarize cause and effect, the past and the present, love and loss. Now that I live on the East Coast, my source of inspiration is my view. We protect what we love."

I had always wanted to control the pitch on a pocket operator directly, rather than thru the trim pot. Obviously this lead to designing a custom PCB.

  • Black Soldier Fly

In the past few days I worked on a song called Black Soldier Fly. This EDM track draws inspiration from Duck Sauce's 'Barbra Streisand,' featuring a catchy melody with occasional interjections of 'Black Soldier Fly.'

It also refers to my current employer, Protix, a company that breeds Black Solder Flies as a sustainable source of proteins and lipids in animal feed.
