  • Eps 150: Special guest; Fr. James Martin, SJ
Today my guest is Rev. James Martin, SJ.

Father Jim is a Jesuit priest, editor at large of America magazine, and bestselling author of Jesus: A Pilgrimage, The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything, and Building a Bridge: How the Catholic Church and the LGBT Community Can Enter into a Relationship of Respect, Compassion, and Sensitivity.

In 2017, Pope Francis appointed him to be a Consultor for the Vatican's Secretariat for Communication.

Our very enjoyable conversation covers spiritual practices, wisdom on prayer in the Ignatian tradition; the reality of gay clergy; how Christians and the church can build bridges to the LGBT community and communicate the truth of God's love for them; the Catholic priest sex abuse scandal and why so many think "It’s a terrible time to be a priest,"; his multi-media work for America Magazine; including Faith in Focus; a bit about his next writing projects; and more.

Interesting extras, including a one-stop spot for valuable links can be found here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/24949432 OR at the website sparkmymuse.com for Episode 150

My work -each week- happens because listeners, just like you, kindly contribute $1, $5, $10 to cover my expenses. If you haven't yet, please consider making a big difference for Spark My Muse at whatever level you can- patreon.com/sparkmymuse

  • Esp 149: Flee, Be Silent, and Pray ; Guest, Ed Cyzewski
Ed Cyzewski says he is an unlikely candidate for the spiritual practices of the Christian contemplative tradition.

“Flee, Be Silent, Pray” are the three actions that form the bias for the contemplative tradition that go back to first Christian monastics of the desert of the 300 and 400 hundreds C.E. in Syria and Egypt.

But for Evangelicals like Ed, this goes against the grain of an action-oriented life that many Christinas have been taught to do. Christians may often feel the drive to, “Engage, Speak up, read Scripture!” or other such imperatives.

Today, we discuss his book "Flee, Be Silent, and Pray: Ancient Prayers for Anxious Christians", and some of its insightful contents such as: preparing our hearts for God's work, Ed's journey from "doing and duty" to "being and sweet repose", having a damaged view of God, taking an intimate journey with Jesus, the fruits of contemplative practice, dark night of the soul, and practices like Examen, Centering Prayer, and confession.

Ed's practical wisdom and personal story are relatable and our conversation is one we're sure you will enjoy.
