  • Eps: 140 | Guest, Clint Sabom: Mystical Experiences, Monastery Life, and the Stages of Contemplative Spirituality
A powerful and largely ineffable mystic experience happened to Clint Sabom as a young man and in the years following it, he slowly began to process and integrate it into a richer spiritual life and understanding. Today I speak with him about what happened and the process of spiritual growth.

He spent a half a year at a monastery and today we will talk about how unique experience as well as the "stages of mysticism" in historical Christian Spirituality as researched and written about by Evelyn Underhill (originally from the time of early Christianity in the age of John Cassian (c. 360 CE, Scythia Minor) - the first to bring the ideas and practices monasticism and the contemplative life to the early medieval West)

  • Worlds Within Worlds [SSL108]
Only our false self has something to lose.

"Life is in a dance between our true and false selves." says Richard Rohr

Using my notes from a talk by Richard Rohr and some of my own added reflections, today I discuss the authentic self (hidden in the Beloved) and the false self (what we need for life in certain ways, but what is oft misunderstood as one's true identity).

This helpful perspective shift can bring more serenity into your heart and life.

Also discussed: Thomas Keating's Boat Exercise / parable.

As we cultivate the space for awareness of this interior condition, we can experience a peace the world (society) cannot give us. We can have heaven within that no one can take away.

Be sure to sign up for the Course "Beginning In the Contemplative Way" which delves into much more on this theme. Find that in the Courses section of SparkMyMuse.com

  • Eps 141: Guest Patrice Gopo - All the Colors We Will See
Drawing on her experience as the child of Jamaican immigrants, born and raised in Anchorage, Alaska; traveling to and living in South Africa and meeting her Zimbabwean future husband; living in the American South and attending mostly church white people (read: feeling not she doesn't fit in within the dominant culture that seems blind to her experience of the world and anyone who looks like her), and in other important ways– Patrice Gopo explores issues of race, immigration, and belonging in the book we will discuss, "All The Colors We Will See".

We touch on important themes more of us should be having with people who see and experience the world different. I hope this episode affirms your experience of not fitting in as valid and if you are part of the dominant color and culture I hope it encourage you to sitting with the reality that many people do not truly feel included.

What would it be like to, in love, ask for help to start new kinds of bridges where we have been blind about the gaps?

Extras for this and every episode are waiting for you there.

You help me to make this happen each week. Thank you.

  • Something About Icons [SSL107]
    Can anyone be an Icon?

    Can anyone make one?

We don't use the term the same way any more so...What is an Icon?

I'm taking on Iconography and inviting you along.

View photos at the direct link here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/21189370 (or at patreon.com/sparkmymuse The post for [SSL107] Soul School 107)

I've always thought icons looked ...well...basically, creepy.

But, there is an entire history I was unaware of. There is rich symbolism in everything included. There is a world of code is colors and details used; in specific techniques and steps. Just the intention one has in the creation of them is a spiritual practice in itself. Even their creation works like a door to the liminal, let alone the beholding of them.

My biggest misunderstanding was in thinking that Icons were expressions of religious Art.
