  • Esp 104: The Listening Day, guest Paul J. Pastor
Today, I invite you to have some respite and make "this 'now', heaven" as my guest Paul J. Pastor puts it. Paul will be reading a bit from his book "The Listening Day" and we will be talking about his life growing up in the Christian faith and learning from inspiring people and how he came to be a writer. Best of all, we will be relaxing in the beauty and reflection of hearing a few readings; and reveling in how language can soak in meaningfully and lavishly into us and soothe our souls, as it were, as Paul reads us two entries. Devotional readings, such as the one he has created, provide us with a way to center our days apart and against the turmoil and unpredictability of our world and hopefully you will get a taste of this enlivening spiritual practice today. Enjoy.

Remember show notes will contain links to his work, his website, and the people we mention, if you'd like to dig deeper. Support the show for just $1 when you access those details (and also get all the show notes for previous episodes) at https://patreon.com/sparkmymuse -You will also get the new book donated by my friend Leo de Pluma.

Pretty please with a cherry on top, recommend this show to a friend today. If you feel extra awesome today, leave a review on iTunes and I'll tweet it out my gratitude.

Thank you for joining me in 2 years of broadcasting THIS VERY WEEK.. People in 175 countries are tuning in and the best in yet to come!

  • Don't Suffer Fools; give them "the Mu" [SSL72]
Today, I start out by reading a short excerpt of the new book available ($1 -or higher- for anyone supporting the show) and then I cover the excellent wisdom from Pádraig Ó Tuama (as I read and then reflect on a transcript from a portion of one of favorite broadcasts.)

The wisdom Pádraig conveys is something he gleaned from philosopher Robert Pirsig and it involves navigating the difficult situations we often find ourselves in–namely the falsely binary ones. It's not just an answer or a response that is so wise, but he defines a disposition in the world we can take up that allows us to move in and among different sorts of people and situations with more grace and far less anxiety. And, better yet, it allows us the the freedom (sometimes even from ourselves) to not back ourselves into impossible corners when people demand of us either / or answers on complex issues.

Thank you for joining me today. Please disburse this episode among your friends and let me know what you think of it.

Get on board as a supporter at patreon.com/sparkmymuse and find the goodies waiting for you too.

    Enjoy!

  • Esp 103: When the church has hurt you, guest Carol Howard Merritt
So many people are not affiliating with the church any more in the United States and elsewhere in the global West and North, yet these same people will also claim to have an interest in spiritual things. Carol Howard Merritt is my guest today. She is an award-winning author, speaker, and minister who often speaks and writes on the topic of ministering in a new generation. She decided to encounter this topic from a practical but also very personal level: pain.

In her book "Healing Spiritual Wounds" she opens up for the first time about her abusive Fundamentalists religious upbringing and the wounds it caused. She offered potent and concrete guidance for moving toward healing and wholeness, and she retells stories of the people she's encountered who have also longed for healing and a reconnection with God that doesn't involve pernicious doctrines or a faith journey mired in self-loathing.

This is a powerful conversation, especially for me personally, as I found Carol's work to awaken memories of my own religious abuse. People can be dogmatic and hurtful whether they have religious motives or not; and we've all been hurt by others, so this episode will probably touch you, even if you haven't experience religious abuse. It's important to remember also that we've all (likely) hurt others somehow because that's what humans seem particularly good at: making mistakes. Moving toward healing and helping others in their journey is the aim of this episode. I think it will benefit many of you and I wish that for you. Carol and I hope that you will pass this episode along to others.

    Thank you.

As usual, detailed notes related to this episode can be found at http://patreon.com/sparkmymuse -I will be releasing a short book for Patrons (ONLY) this month- so jump in on that and sponsor the show!

If you'd like you can stop by the website sparkmymuse.com to sign up for the newsletter or to say hello. On Twitter I am @lisadelay

My goal is to get to 50 reviews on iTunes by June. Will you help make that happen?

Thanks for listening and enjoy the show.

  • No Fixing, No Saving [SSL71]
Welcome to another weekly delivery of audio goodness!

I was blown away by the resources that I found and I had to share them. Today, you will hear some of what I found: practical and surprising insights on relating to others and building trust from the renowned Center for Courage and Renewal founded by the esteemed Parker J. Palmer. These practices, principles, and foundational touchstones can be used to build close friendships and vital small groups and safe spaces to solve problems and create better understanding in the workplace, among leaders, within communities, families, or in ministry.

This is such a content-rich program that you may need to listen a few times. The show notes will offer links to find this resource material to use for yourself for FREE. Supporting the this program by buying show notes (just $1) helps keep costs down during production, week after week and let's me know that you care about what I'm doing. Expenses like audio file storage, website hosting, security, are just a few of the costs I incur and pay out of my own pocket. Thanks for listening, sharing the program with others, and for helping out when you can.
