  • Time and the Violation of Values (SSL 66) - Spark My Muse
When people go into professions like medicine, police work, or education, they are often guided by values that they might readily disconnect from once they acquire money, power, or responsibility. The familiar refrain about "power tending to corrupt" has a fulcrum: disconnection disconnection from original values that have been thwarted by something people never saw coming.

That "something" and what to do about it is the topic of today's episode.

  • Eps 95: Who Were the Medieval Woman Mystics?
Although the early Church leaders agreed that “God becomes human [in Jesus] so humans can become divine” ( Athanasius ), it wasn't just the theological ideas of the Beguine movement that sprouted among the laity in Europe, that threatened the powerful and the political at the Vatican in the Early Middle Ages–it was the love and devotion the common people had for them and that these women devoted to God and not them, that was the problem.

Today, theologian Dr Wendy Farley explains who these women were, what they believe, how the Church quashed their grassroots movement of devotion to God, and why there is such a renewed interest in their stories and spirituality today. We will focus on the lives and ideas of Julian of Norwich, Mechthild de Magdeburg, and Marguerite Porete – who was burned at the stake.

We will also discuss the consequences of Protestantism happening during modernity, the challenges of institutional power, prayer in terms of "the silence between the words" (apophatic), the nature of contemplative spiritual practice itself in Christianity and across other religious traditions, and more.

Strap yourself in. This is a meaty episode full of history and intriguing stories about the very long contemplative history of the Christian tradition, and plenty to think about.

    Thank you for listening.

  • Eps 94: The (untrue) Stories We Tell Ourselves in Relationships, Guest Scott Gornto
The stories we tell ourselves about problems in our life, what other people are thinking, or what other people are thinking about us, are so thoroughly polluted by our backstory, our typical anxieties, and other factors, that these stories have the power to hijack and destroy our most important relationships. Worse yet–it can all happen while we assume we are perceiving reality fairly well. Research shows that when people in conflict compare their stories, they find radically disparate interpretations of reality. It's time to find a better way to deal with the discrepancies that create such a mess in everyday life.

Today, my guest, therapist, speaker and author R. Scott Gornto and I discuss the fascinating ways we construct reality and try to function in it. We also cover the main themes from his book "The Stories We Tell Ourselves: Stop Jumping to Conclusions. Free Yourself from Anxiety. Transform Your Relationships" as well as a simple but brilliant four-step-method to assess and reconcile our stories with each other to foster deeper and healthier relationships–instead of strife–when trouble arises.

Thank you for listening in today. Be sure to link up with the show notes at https://patreon.com/sparkmymuse that have a visual reference of the show and related links. (They cost just $1 for a month's worth of show notes!)

This show has the potential to help out a lot of people, so please spread it around!
