Joe Lurie is Executive Director Emeritus of the University of California Berkeley’s International House, a dynamic multi-national residential program center serving the campus, local community, and 1,000 residents from 75 plus countries annually. Its mission is to foster intercultural respect and understanding for the promotion of a more peaceful world.

He served in this role for two decades and subsequently has been an active teacher and intercultural trainer at UC Berkeley and consultant on cross-cultural communications. Clients in the U.S. and around the world include: Google, Google.org; Chevron; American Express; The Peace Corps; The Institute of International Education; Upwardly Global; Street Smart Brazil; The World Affairs Council of Northern California; The University of Colorado; Cal Discoveries Travel; and Tsinghua University in Beijing, among others.

A former Peace Corps volunteer in Kenya, Joe directed programs in France, Kenya, and Ghana for the School for International Training, and served as Vice-President for AFS Intercultural Programs in the U.S. and National Study Abroad Chair for NAFSA: Association of International Educators. His writings have appeared in Harper’s Magazine, U.S. News & World Report and were highlighted on National Public Radio. He is co-author of Close Encounters of A Cross-Cultural Kind.

He was featured in a PBS documentary broadcast across the U.S. and in China, and has been interviewed by The Travel Channel. Joe holds an advanced degree and diploma in African Studies from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and an M.A. in English from McGill University in Montreal.

Award-winning author Amy Corwin joined the Romance Writers of America as a charter member and has recently joined Mystery Writers of America. She has retired from a career as an enterprise computer systems administratorto write full time. She writes Regencies, paranormals, and mysteries, although to be truthful, most of her books include a bit of murder and mayhem since she discovered that killing off at least one character is a highly effective way to make the remaining ones toe the plot line.

Her first book, Smuggled Rose, came out in 2007. Her second book, I Bid One American, was originally published May 2008 with the paperback version in November, 2008 and has since been republished in 2013.  She followed this with a novella, Christmas Mishaps, in 2008, and a short story, Outrageous Behavior, in 2009.  She is currently working on several mysteries.

Amy lives out in the country, way out in the country, and deeply regrets not habitually carrying a camera. Without photographic evidence, no one will believe she nearly ran over a 20 lb barracuda lying in the middle of her road; saw a hot-air balloon land in her front yard; and found a dairy cow thoughtfully trimming the grass at her mailbox.  She wishes she’d also had a rope when she came across the cow because she could have used the cow poo for her Old Garden roses, which currently number well over 100. 

Her wildlife biologist husband, a chocolate lab, a Chesapeake Bay Retriever, and two cats enjoy the temperate climate on thirty acres near the coast of North Carolina.
