Acompanhe o texto dessa aula - Take a Bullet Train from Madrid to Barcelona for Just $6
Spain's national railway company, Renfe, is offering bullet train tickets between Spain's two largest cities, Barcelona and Madrid, for just $6.
The offer is for tickets on Renfe's low-cost service, Avlo, which will begin operating between the two cities on June 23. And it's not just for Barcelona and Madrid, but for travel between all nine Avlo destinations.
The cheap tickets must be bought by February 14, however, and can only be used for travel between June 23 and December 11. Normal prices range from about $12 to more than $70 one-way.
The company's website crashed as people rushed to buy the cheap tickets as soon as they were available on January 26. However, Renfe said 100,000 were still snapped up in the first 24 hours.
The offer coincides with Renfe's 80th anniversary and will help the company compete with French rail service Ouigo, which will start operating between Madrid and Barcelona on May 10.
Moving at up to 330 kilometers per hour, the Avlo trains will travel the 600 kilometers between Barcelona and Madrid in as little as 150 minutes, although most trains will make more stops and take about three hours.
Japan's fastest bullet trains take about 150 minutes to travel about 550 kilometers between Tokyo and Osaka, but at a cost of about $140.
Spain's high-speed rail network is slightly longer than Japan's 3,041 kilometers, according to the International Union of Railways. At 3,330 kilometers long, it's the second longest in the world after China's enormous 35,000 kilometer network.
