Japanese Artist Creates Art by Cutting Leaves'

Going by the name of Lito, a 34-year-old Japanese artist is using leaves to create a type of Japanese art called kirie.

Kirie artists usually take something like a piece of paper and cut it very carefully to make art. Using the small space of a leaf takes a lot of focus, which Lito says helps with his attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, known as ADHD.

The result is a collection showing worlds full of animals, plants, people and technology that he shares on Instagram and Twitter. He has about 40,000 fans on Instagram and 26,000 on Twitter.

Many of the leaves tell a story, showing things like animals giving flowers to their friends or penguins putting away their umbrellas after the rain. Some also show scenes from books and movies, like E.T. and Peter Rabbit.

Lito began with cutting paper, but started using leaves in January after seeing a Spanish artist's work. Most of the leaves are green, but he used red leaves to create scenes like red foxes standing at the gates of Kyoto's Fushimi Inari Shrine, which are known for their red-orange color.

In an interview with Maido na News, he said each project needs to be done in two hours, before the leaves begin to get dry and change color. He also said that he takes requests, wrapping up the leaves and sending them before they get dry.

Lito's pictures from My Father's Dragon, a children's book by Ruth Stiles Gannett, have been very popular — something he says he did not expect. The book is known as Elmer no Bouken, or Elmer's Adventure, in Japan.

KFC Sells Firelogs That Smell Like Fried Chicken

For the third year in a row, KFC will sell firelogs that smell like its fried chicken. Each firelog can burn for up to three hours.

KFC worked with firelog and recycling company Enviro-Log to make the ""11 Herbs & Spices Firelog"" out of 100% recycled materials. KFC says it uses 11 herbs and spices to make its fried chicken.

US customers can buy the firelog at some Walmart stores and on Walmart's website for about $16. This year, it will also be available in Canada for the first time.

Ross McRoy, founder of Enviro-Log, said that the KFC firelog has become more and more popular each year. It sold out in just three hours the first year it was available in 2018, and sold out in 2019 as well.

This isn't the first unusual product KFC has made. In 2016, the company sold nail polish that tasted like fried chicken in Hong Kong.

Also in 2016, KFC made sunscreen that smelled like fried chicken and offered it for free online. Within two hours, all 3,000 bottles were given to customers in the US.

In 2019, the company started KFC Innovations Lab, where customers could help choose product ideas for the company to make, and give money to make them happen. Some ideas included a hot tub that looked like a KFC bucket and a table made of KFC cardboard.

Study: Smartphones May Be Lowering Exam Grades

A study in Educational Psychology has found that US university students who copy homework answers get better grades on their homework, but worse grades on exams compared to those who answer homework questions from memory or by guessing. And smartphones may be making the problem worse.

The study followed 2,433 students taking 12 different university classes over 11 years. It showed that students who did better on their homework than on their exams were more likely to use Google, check their textbook, or talk to a friend who already had the answer when completing their homework.

These students' exam results were several percentage points below those of students who did their homework from memory.

The number of students doing better on their homework than on exams has also increased from 14% in 2008 to 55% in 2017. During that time, smartphones have become ubiquitous: the first iPhone was released in June 2007, and according to the Pew Research Center, by January 2018, 77% of US adults had a smartphone.

Writing in NJ.com, Arnold Glass, the study's lead author, said that smartphones make it ""remarkably easy"" to look up homework answers. He also said that smartphones make it harder to pay attention to homework, since students may also be using them to chat with friends or play games, which affects how well they remember what they learn.

Glass said that students are less likely to remember an answer if it did not come from their own mind. He said that students should always try to come up with an answer on their own, even if they guess or get it wrong.

""If the student does this first and then finds the correct answer online, the student is likely to remember the answer,"" he said — and this will help them do better on exams.

Netflix has announced that it is increasing the price of its Standard and Premium subscriptions for US customers.

Standard subscriptions now cost $14 a month, a $1 increase, and Premium subscriptions cost $18 a month, a $2 increase. Basic subscriptions will not change from $9 a month.

The price changes will affect new customers immediately, and customers who already have a subscription will start paying the higher price in the next few weeks.

A Netflix spokesperson told The Verge that the company is raising its prices "so that we can continue to offer more variety of TV shows and films." At the start of the year, experts expected Netflix to spend more than $17 billion making new shows and movies in 2020.

Netflix also increased prices for customers in Canada and Australia in October. US customers had a price increase in 2019, too, when prices for all subscriptions went up by $1 or $2.

Netflix has gained a lot of new customers as people spend more time at home because of the coronavirus pandemic. The company got more than 28 million new customers in the first nine months of 2020 — more than the total number of new customers it got in all of 2019. The company now has more than 195 million customers in total.

Netflix's prices are higher than those of many of its competitors, however. Disney+ costs $7 a month in the US, while Hulu costs $6 a month for its basic subscription, or $12 a month to see shows without advertisements.

The world's longest pedestrian suspension bridge, the 516 Arouca, has been built in Portugal.

The new bridge is named after how long it is in meters. It has been built in the Arouca UNESCO Global Geopark, an hour's drive southeast of the city of Porto.

The 516 Arouca's walkway is about a meter wide, and made with metal grates that let visitors see the Paiva River 176 meters below them as they cross. A video of the bridge shows it moving from side to side as people walk across it.

The Arouca UNESCO Global Geopark has rocks that are hundreds of millions of years old, from a time when the area was part of a huge continent called Gondwana. The area also offers many outdoor activities in its mountains and rivers.

It will cost about $14 to cross the 516 Arouca, but just under $12 for students and people over 65. Children under 6 will not be allowed on the bridge. People who live in Arouca, however, will be able to use it for free if they have a resident card.

Work on building the 516 Arouca began in 2017. It was finished in July 2020, but an opening date has not been decided.

The new bridge has taken the record for world's longest pedestrian suspension bridge from the Charles Kuonen Suspension Bridge in Switzerland. The Swiss bridge is 494 meters long and free to cross. It opened in 2017

US magazine Rolling Stone has released a new version of its 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list. The list was originally released in 2003 and slightly updated in 2012.

The new list was voted on by over 300 music professionals, including journalists, music company executives, and artists like Beyoncé and Taylor Swift. Voters had to name their top 50 albums, which were then given points based on their position in each person's list. Over 3,000 albums received votes.

US soul singer Marvin Gaye's What's Going On was voted number one on the new list, after coming sixth in 2003 and 2012.

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band by The Beatles was the top album in 2003 and 2012, but is in 24th position this time. The band from Liverpool had four albums in the top 10 on the first two lists, but only one in 2020 — Abbey Road, in fifth position.

US singer Lauryn Hill's first album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, made a huge jump from the 2012 list, rising from 314th position to number 10.

Canadian Joni Mitchell's Blue was again the highest-placed album by a female artist. The album moved from 30th position in 2012 to number three in 2020.

The new top 50 includes seven female artists, compared to just three in 2012.

There are also 153 albums on the new list that didn't appear in the previous lists at all, including 86 from the 21st century. US rapper Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly is the highest new album, in 19th place.
